master bunq often says that the magnetic strip is activated depending on the country bunq in the app. It was also said that you could, for example, add the USA so that the comic became active because in the USA this is apparently still a common payment method.
In practice this is of course not true at all. The magnetic strip is simply always there and does not become spontaneously active or inactive depending on an app setting. In the meantime all kinds of settings have disappeared as a result of which you can no longer set up things like this yourself (or wrongly!).
What I think is happening now is that bunq checks whether that country is active when making a payment via the magnetic strip. That also means that a payment in Hong Kong will not work if you only have Europe and the USA active. The only way this can work is if every magnetic strip bunq is actually checked by bunq . You can therefore not do an offline transaction.
I don't know how this works with oofline transactions with a chip. The settings on the chip will of course not be updated if you adjust something in the app. That is only possible if you do an online transaction with the chip in the device. This is also necessary, for example, if you have changed the PIN code. But that this is also necessary for a change in your country settings is not mentioned anywhere in my opinion. Anyway, I don't know if that is possible on the chip either. bunq this a smaller risk because it involves a maximum of 250 euros.
