Knowing how to manage your money when you travel abroad can be stressful, so we’ve introduced Travel Assistant to give you all the information you’ll need when traveling abroad! ✈️
How does Travel Assistant work?
As an interactive map in the bunq app, you can check out travel and budgeting tips on how to best manage your money and use bunq in different locations. This way you can travel with ease and be stress free on your next trip! Find the Travel Assistant here.
Travel Assistant lets you know:
- A simple and easy-to-read overview of the exchange rate
Don’t worry about memorizing exchange rates. We’ll give you a reminder
- Whether or not you have enabled card payments for the country of your destination
This topic can walk you through how to do this.
- Which bunq card you should use
Some countries prefer Maestro, some Mastercard. Now you won’t have to remember which.
- If other bunqers have been there before
Learn from their experiences so you know what to expect when you arrive.
- Tips & tricks for different countries provided by our community
All travel tips are welcome!
You can also enable location-based push notifications, so you can be an expert on your destination as soon as you land! 🛬
For these notifications we use geofences! This means that your device detects when you get to an airport and automatically alerts the bunq app of your arrival (so your location will not be logged in the app). If you then have Travel Assistant notifications enabled in the app, you’ll receive a push notification to give you travel tips before and after your departure into a new country.
What can Travel Assistant help me with?
Straight from the bunq app, Travel Assistant can help you find everything you need to know about managing your money at your destination.
Wherever you go, the bunq app puts your mind at ease: exchange rates, which card to use, tips and tricks, you name it. Everything you need to enjoy carefree traveling, right at your fingertips.

FAQ
Q: My country is yellow/grey pinned, should I be worried that my card won’t work?
A: No, This just means that we haven’t seen as many transactions here. Check on pin machines for card acceptance logos, Mastercard has huge acceptance worldwide.
Q: Hey, I used my card and got a really bad exchange rate/ATM fees, what happened to no fees?
A: A lot of ATMs in other countries will try to make you accept their own exchange rate. Remember to always pay in the local currency and never accept the conversion, we'll take care of the rest and exchange using Mastercards exchange rate. It always best to use Bank arms instead of the small ones, these are less likely to charge you a fee for using them, if they do, the fee is from the ATM, not bunq.
Q: Why do I get a push notification when I'm at the airport even though I have my location settings set to "Only when using the app"?
A: We use geofences for these notifications. That means our app tells the phone where the airport is, and asks it to send a push if you go there. Then, if you do go there, the phone displays the message by itself. We don't actually know that you went to the airport, and the phone doesn't tell us it sent you the message. We also keep cache to make sure that you get notifications that make life easy. You can disable these notifications from Profile > Security & Settings > Notification. The app does not require you to always share location for airport notification.
Q: Who can use this feature?
A: The Travel Assistant is available for all plans we provide 🚀
