The bunq community has grown exponentially following the release of our Travel Card, and we noticed that some users outside of the Netherlands wanted to be able to make contactless payments that varied from country to country.
How were contactless limits before?
In the Netherlands, for example, there was a cap of €25 per contactless payment, with a cumulative limit of €50 before you’re asked for your PIN.
However, some countries have different limits. For example in the UK, the contactless limit is £30 and in Australia $100 per contactless transaction.
These limits occasionally caused transactions to be declined at overseas payment terminals because the terminal didn’t know what to do when we asked for a PIN.
We came up with a way to improve this so you can always have the best experience when going abroad! 😀
How did we improve this?
From now on, whenever you make a contactless payment in another country, bunq will automatically apply that country’s limit to the card.
This means that all your bunq cards will function exactly as the local merchants would expect and work even better as you travel all over the world! 🌍
As always, you maintain full control over the security of your bunq card abroad through local country settings, so it can only be used where you allow it! Find out more about country settings here.
