βοΈ Heading to Hungary? We've gathered some tips from the bunq community to make sure your trip is the smoothest it can be. π
Check them out below! π π
Using your card
π³ Do I need cash in Hungary, or can I use my card everywhere?
Most places accept card, expecially in areas like Budapest.
It's always a good idea to have some cash on you as a backup, just in case.
π° What currency do they use here?
The currency here is Forint. The symbol is Ft or HUF
π§ Which ATMβs can I use for free?
The bunq community has reported that all major bank ATM's here are free to use. π
π΅ If I want cash, how much should I take out of an ATM?
15.000 HUF should be enough for a few days, since you can use your card for nearly everything. Don't worry, that's only about β¬45.
π³ Should I choose local currency or Euros when paying?
If you're asked to choose between local currency and Euros, always choose local currency.
That way bunq does the conversion for you, and you get to take advantage of the best rates with bunq ZeroFX.
Staying connected
π± Can I roam, or should I get a local SIM?
All EU mobile plans should let you roam for free.
If you don't have an EU plan, you can learn about your local SIM card options here.
Useful things to know
πββοΈ How does tipping work?
It is normal to tip in Hungary unless you're unhappy with the service. A normal tip is 10% of the meal price.
If you can, tip in cash. It has a better chance of going to the service staff instead of the management.
Service charges that get automatically added are becoming more common. One bunqer reported they were charged a 20% service charge without being asked recently.
If a service charge is added to your bill, there's no need to tip.
