Using your card

💳 Do I need cash in Mongolia, or can I use my card everywhere?

Most major shops and tourist areas accept cards, however smaller shops may require cash. Make sure you always carry some on you.

💰 What currency do they use here?

The currency here is Mongolian tögrög. The symbol is ₮ MNT.

🏧 Which ATM’s can I use for free?

The bunq community hasn't reported reported any free ATM's here yet. If you find one, help other bunqers by sharing it here!

💵 If I want cash, how much should I take out of an ATM?

300 000 MNT should be enough for a few days.

💳 Should I choose local currency or Euros when paying?

If you're asked to choose between local currency and Euros, always choose local currency.

📱 Can I roam, or should I get a local SIM?

Most EU mobile plans will charge you for roaming.

Wifi is readily available, especially in coffee shops.

Currently traveling in Mongolia, and most, if not all, ATMs don't charge any fees. They will say that a 500mnt fee will be taken, but it won't actually do that and in the receipt it also says 0 fees.

The only thing you need to worry about is being able to actually use your card here, be it Maestro, MasterCard or your travelcard, they are barely accepted anywhere, even at ATMs. I've notice that at most shops they have multiple card readers, and the one they usually use won't take your bunq card, and will say that 'a connection could not be made to the bank'. They then pull out a different card reader on which it may work sometimes, it's a gamble.
