So, I went to Malawi two years ago, let me try to give you the information I remember.
The local currency is Malawian Kwacha (MKW). €1,- is around 800 MKW.
You'll need cash here, since no cards are accepted in any store or restaurant. You can withdraw money at Malawi Standard or National bank.
ATMs can be hard to find outside of the big cities, so make sure you withdraw enough. Around the first days of the month, the Malawians get their salary. They will all go to the ATMs right away, so it will be extremely busy at the ATMs and it's likely your foreign card will not be accepted these days, to ensure there is enough money left in the ATM. This is always a problem, there just isn't enough money in the ATMs at times, so don't wait untill you're out of cash before you go withdraw some more. The maximum amount you can withdraw is 40.000 MKW at a time, with a maximum of 5 times a day.
They drive on the left side of the road here!
You can get a really nice three-course meal at a 'fancy' restaurant for around €5,-
It's best to get a local sim. You can get these at the airport or in stores in the big cities. It's usually a prepaid sim. People sell credit to top up the sim all around Malawi. The people that sell this are just walking around the streets with these cards in their purse. You can also buy it at stores, of course. Airtel is the best provider, in my opinion.
