We have been made aware of ongoing phishing scams that are pretending to be bunq or other banks and asking to verify your login details in order to steal them. We wanted to address this and give you some further information and tips to avoid becoming a victim of the scam.
What is phishing? 🎣
Phishing is a form of fraud where the scammer will send communications (emails, texts, messages over social media) pretending to be from reputable companies to trick you into sharing your personal details such as passwords, account details and card numbers.
How are these scammers trying to use bunq?
Phishing can take a lot of different forms. They for example can be SMS messages or emails pretending to be us and tell you that something is wrong with your account and that you need to verify your username and password. Or a SMS/email from a company telling you that you need to pay a certain ‘fee’.
How can I prevent being phished? 🙅♂️
NEVER give your login credentials or personal information
bunq will never ask users to provide us with login or personal information outside of the app, so if someone pretending to be us is asking for this information, it is a scam and you should not give any information.
Check the format and spelling in messages
If the format and spelling doesn’t match the businesses web address it claims to be from, it’s likely a scam.
Watch out for fake websites
Always make sure you’re on bunq.app if you’re entering your login details.
Contact us via our official channels
If you receive an email from a source you recognize (like bunq 😊) but it appears slightly off or suspicious, contact us or the source separately to confirm that it’s authentic. This helps to identify new scams.
Be careful with your posts on social media
When posting on social media be careful with your personal information like your date of birth, vacation plans, address, phone number etc. because this information can be useful for scammers.
Do you need to report something? 🌈
If it's a fraudulent user, you can help keep bunq safe. Simply fill out this form and we’ll take it from there. If reporting a possible fraudster, please include their account number and any information you have related to the case.
What to do if you don’t trust a bunq.me link?
If you receive a bunq.me payment link and you suspect it's fraud, please use the report button to report the page to our compliance team. The team will immediately take action against the account.
