It was always advertised as 99 Euro per year. It wasn't a pay once, use forever deal. Never. By then coupling it to SuperGreen, the price basically increased to 9 Euros per month (or 108 Euros per year) from the 2nd year on.
I think what bunq is doing now makes total sense. People always complained that the price is ok for the first year when taking into account the production price of such a card, but that from the second year on they don't want to pay that much. And now they don't have to anymore.
On top of that, for new Metal Card customers, the card is now basically completely free, if they commit to being bunq customers for long enough so that the production costs are amortized. Seems to me like a very fair deal. Maybe it was just a reaction to Vivid's metal card being free (well, it's free but hideous). But that doesn't make the deal worse.
And keep in mind it's bunq we're talking about. The price structure NOT changing for a longer period than 2 or 3 months would be the weird thing ;-)
