Transparant account photos in dark mode

Hi all,

I have a small cosmetic suggestion.

As I was selecting some pictures to personalise my bank accounts, I noticed that transparant pictures automatically get given a white background. As I use dark mode by default, it's a bit of shame that some nicely designed transparant images have large white frame around them in dark mode.

My suggestion / request: could you make transparant images actually transparant or at least allow us to pick the background colour for it?

René I received an answer from support about this, and they told me that they convert the uploaded images to JPG, which doesn't support transparency indeed. They have no intention on changing this because PNGs would slow down the performance in the app. I don't know why that would be, but they said that I shouldn't expect this to change in the future.

They recommended me making the icons I wanted to use using the background color of the app when in dark mode. They gave me the hex colour to use, which is #222224.

If you do that, it'll look good in dark mode, but obviously not in the normal color scheme.

The ability or using transparent images for your monetary accounts pictures is a perfect idea💡, especially is bunq is set to Dark Mode.

Dennis I did this as a temporary solution, which does work as I have night mode activated permanently.

I do think this is a bit of a ‘design flaw’. Any personalized image with any transparency will look ugly in either day or night mode now.

René I completely agree.

I ended up redesigning the icons I'm using. They were round with transparent background, so I filled the transparent area with the icon's colour, so it would be square.

Took a bit of work, but looks good, for the icons I'm using. And it works in both dark and light mode.

PNG-24 uses a lossless compression, simply meaning that the PNG image quality will out-stand that of JPEG. Obliviously this comes at the price of a bigger file size. So at least in theory it would take longer to load and show the images.

But back to reality... I doubt if the average user will noticed any glitches when bunq would use PNG. The internet and phone speed of the majority of the users will be more then enough to handle this. Besides the images are cached in the app and relative small.

Bottom line: switching to PNG cant be a real problem.

John Do If it's a matter of load time, the icons only need to be loaded from the cloud once after generated, and afterwards cached in your phone. I don't see a big performance issue here.

Bunq could also convert PNG files to two JPG files (both background colors).

Casper Yes! Assuming that bunq's concerns about performance for whatever reason makes sense, this should definitely solve the problem.

Maybe the image processing library they use doesn't handle PNG's well, or they just don't want to put in the effort in making the dark mode experience perfect.
