Dude, I feel exactly the same right now! My story with bunq began last summer, just days before the major update, so I was still on the old pricing plan (paying 1 Euro for my Maestro each month). The update was such a disappointment at first - I really wanted to immerse into the bunq experience completely, but 7,99 a month for a bank account? For debit cards? And considering that I happen to live in a country, where many legacy banks offer this for "free" (or so does it seem, at least)? No way! So I started to use bunq on and off, some petty card payments here and there, but nothing serious - essentially a "playing account". Being able to use iDeal was a nice touch (finally I could buy NS tickets online, for some reason they are the ONLY train company in Europe, where you can't buy tickets with a major credit card...), a not-so-nice touch, however, was the lack of 3D Secure, which I really need for many of my regular online merchants. I sometimes thought: yes, perhaps I might consider an upgrade again one day, if only they would offer 3D Secure... Well, as we all know, it finally arrived in March, but I was oh so reluctant still.
But then I started to consider. For how many things am I paying 6 a month, 9 here, 12 there - what exactly would be wrong paying 8 euros for the financial hub, for the backbone to make it all possible? And then I started discussing this with my colleagues (I am working at a university, liberal arts, many intellectual guys and gals who really don't approve of what's going on in the financial industry). We more and more agreed that bunq's approach to banking might well be the perfectly right approach to banking. There are other "alternative banks" around here as well, some of them even related to the church, but a few years ago, it turned out these self-proclaimed "ethical" banks were investing into weapon manufacturing companies and other evil-doers just as any other legacy bank...
So to make a long story short: I did it. Within just 60 seconds, I became a Premium member and ordered my Mastercard - which was in the post today, 5 days before the estimated delivery date, as I might add. A few minutes ago, I activated it, and finally I have two colorful bunq cards in my wallet - the grey and boring Visa card from my legacy bank found its resting place in a drawer for now. Thank you, guys!
