Bunq.me not working in Ireland

I gave the bunq.me link to several people, most say it will not process for them. Any solutions?

Cathal Hi! Bunq should work in Ireland. Did they also tell you what's going wrong? With some more information we might be able to help you!

Cathal What payment method were they trying to use? Credit/Debit cards? Do they use one of the support card networks (Mastercard/Visa)? In general, Irish cards are supposed to work, but we would need more information here to make better guesses at what the problem might've been.

As for the other payment methods, iDEAL is for people with Dutch bank accounts, Bancontact is for people with Belgian bank accounts, and SOFORT supports customers from Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Italy. Therefore, if you're sending the link to people from Ireland the only option for them is using credit/debit card payment, if they're using an Irish bank.

Thijs It just failed using a visa debit from another Irish bank account. No 2fa was instigated just hung and then failed

Cathal Jakob isn't talking about topping up; the payment methods shown on the Top Up page are also visible for people when paying a payment request.

Cathal Yes, I wasn't talking about top-ups, but about the payment link (bunq.me) -- though indeed the system behind them works similarly. I know the page I have linked about says "top-ups" but the same country restrictions are valid for bunq.me pages and payment requests, too.

The part about 2FA failing is some good input, though. Seems like that's where it breaks. Of course bunq.me supports 3DS in general, but there might be a bug in some system (whether that be on bunq's side, the payment processor's side or at the other bank) that prevents it from working as intended.

I haven't recently used a bunq.me link. But topup fails is what's in my post. 2fa is 2 factor authentication. It must not be the correct terminology in the banking world. But that's how I try to rationalise it. Basically need to approve such online payment for any Irish online visa payments in the form of a notification in banking app on phone. If the requesting bank, in our case bunq, does not use this then payments are blocked by the Irish banks.

Paul Yep, I guess the 2FA really refers to SCA then, which is usually now implemented through 3DS 2.2 in case of Mastercard and Visa. The bunq.me pay with credit/debit card feature is compliant with that in general as far as I'm aware, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to accept any European cards (the same legislation that requires usage of SCA in Ireland is also in place in all other EU states: PSD2). I tried to look it up especially on websites of other Irish banks, and also only found references to SCA: https://aib.ie/psd2 or https://www.bankofireland.com/sca

With that in mind, even though bunq.me generally supports it, there might still be incompatibilities with certain banks. Every bank implements 3DS a bit differently, and it's a possibility there might be bugs triggered in someone's system. After all, a card transaction touches not just systems of at least two banks here, but also of payment processors and the card network. I'll give this thread a "Bugs" tag for now and hopefully bunq can analyze this behavior soon so you have more luck with bunq.me in Ireland.
