Djoeri Timessen: bunq’s new CPO and the youngest banking director in the Netherlands

Story

Hey bunqers,

We’ve got some exciting news to share! Our very own Djoeri Timessen has become bunq’s Chief Product Officer after dedicating the last 5 years to helping bunq become the true alternative to traditional banking. 🎉

Even more impressive, he has done this at just 29 years old, making him the youngest board member at a Dutch bank. This wasn’t just a simple promotion, however. In order to become bunq's CPO Djoeri needed approval from the DNB, bunq’s managing board and bunq’s supervisory board. ✅

The DNB rarely approves directors under the age of 40, let alone those under 30, so you can imagine how this is even more of an incredible achievement.

As CPO Djoeri will have complete oversight of our product roadmap to make sure we keep pushing the boundaries of innovation to deliver amazing features for all bunqers.

Have you got any questions for Djoeri? We’d love to hear them! Comment below and he’ll come through with some answers!

- Derrick

Congratulations, Djoeri, gefeliciteerd! Being there from the very early Project Clear moments that is certainly well deserved.

Since nobody is asking any questions, I will! As CPO you’re in total charge of the products bunq offers. Will the two-price-point system remain or will you change the offering in response to the feedback you’ve had on the forum after the launch of bunq Premium? And what’s a product or service you’re eager to introduce that’s not yet available from the big banks? Lastly, how do you think PSD II will change the landscape of banking? Through PSD II and open banking, much of what bunq does in the app could be mimicked (Payconiq for paying through QR codes, there will be apps for real-time notifications of balance changes, etc…), how will bunq adapt to stay relevant? Of course I also want to congratulate you on the new position!

photo

Yes I asked about PSD 2 also. How will Bunq stay the course? Also stick to guarantee < 100 K deposits/ funds as this is also about to ‘change’ through EU/ ECB banking union ambitions. See the link I dropped in another conversation. 🔎

Hi Alessandro,

Above Djoeri has given answers to the questions that are asked 😃

If there is anything you would like us/him to elaborate on, please let us know!

photo

Hi Alessandro,

We indeed work with a notification system! If you 'follow the topic' you'll receive a notification at any moment there is a new comment 😃

You can follow a topic by choosing 'follow this conversation' written in blue letters in the app for each topic 🌈

photo

I am following the topic, but if I open a notification on my phone I’m not taken to the new comment or even the topic, but rather to the Together overview. Just now I had two notifications for Together, but they’re not actually visible anywhere in the app. This is way different from, say, Facebook where you have a list of unread notifications and if you click one, you’re taken to the exact thread/comment the notification is for. If I were very active on Together in a variety of different topics, this notification system would not be very practical at all. 😔

Congrats Djoeri and colleagues!!

Q: How did you guys accomplish this at DNB? What made them go out of their way for you and bunq?

photo
10

Yeah, and since when is De Nerderlandse bank needed to appoint your directors?

Great job Djoeri! Congrats and success!

Ongelofelijk!

Thanks for all the warm words guys! Let's answer some questions! 😊

  1. Regarding our pricing, we introduced bunq Pack specifically so that if you bunq Together, you benefit. What's important to note here is that while we're in the same space as the bigger banks, our business model is different in that we do not make money with your deposits nor offer credit, which for other banks is a big source of income. We just want to offer you the best, Premium experience - and that's exactly what we're focusing on. We'll keep on adding exciting things.
  2. New products and services go hand in hand with the question about PSD2. PSD2 will force parties to open up, which in a healthy market would happen organically (but didn't unfortunately, hence we needed the legislation). So how to keep running ahead of the curve? Supplying the best user experience. And that goes beyond just our API. A few weeks back I got the question: "How will your API be still relevant when there are other banking APIs?". That's like asking how our app is still relevant with other banking apps around - and of course there are already plenty of banking apps around. We'll need to keep introducing smart ideas that click into your daily life behaviour. And since we like to surprise, you'll find out as soon as we introduce it 😄
  3. With regards to DNB: I cannot speak on their behalf. I can tell you that I was quite happy to get the phone call! 🙃

Once again thanks - you'll see me around on Together! 😊

Hey Djoeri,

Regarding point 2, if you are looking for the best User Experience, have you considered to aggregate, via API, accounts from different banks across Europe that provide a worst user experience, and allow customers to handle their finances from BUNQ app no matter where their original account were. That would also help them to take the decision to move forward into using BUNQ as main account.

In the market there are plenty of aggregators of bank acccounts like Yolt, Bankin', and Outbank. I am sure Bunq could do it far better.
