  • Debit card without IBAN

I just tried to buy a mobile phone but couldn’t because my debit card does not have my IBAN. Is this a temporary card? How can I get one with my IBAN?

What card did you use? Maestro or Mastercard?

Mastercard don’t have an IBAN, but a 16 digit card number.

@Janaina-Grey-Wolf#77608 for Maestro cards you choose the IBAN during the ordering. When you close the IBAN later on then your card will still have that IBAN on it; you can order a new card, but as the card is still functioning perfectly I’d consider that a waste of money myself. Did you close the IBAN that’s printed on the card recently maybe? Then you could still re-open it; it should be under your archived accounts with the option to “unarchive” it (within 60 days of archival). 🙂

(as a tip: I have one “main” IBAN, the one that was created when I signed up, and I intend to never delete this one. All my cards have that particular IBAN on it, so I know I can always use that IBAN for services that want to see the IBAN printed on the card)

Yes, mine is MasterCard. I had just ordered a new maestro with the iban on it as apparently I need it to buy a phone. Thank you for your reply tho!

@Janaina-Grey-Wolf#77608 The question here is why they want an IBAN on the card... When it is for verification, they could just ask you to pay the phone via your card and they can get the number from the transaction, or debit one cent from the account.

I thought the same, Sam. But apparently is a common request from merchants here.

„Common“ other than for and installment payments?
Mobile phones are often sold similarly: you buy a mobile phone at a „subsidized“ price with a contract, it works essentially like a small loan that you pay back installments, as part of your cellular service subscription. That’s why they do a credit check and use bank cards for verification. Used to be (and I believe still is) is a thing in Germany.

Still, if you live any other other than the Netherlands, I’d still have my doubts if your bunq card will help - even if it had an IBAN on it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the merchant (or cellular service provider in the background) will reject it as part of their credit checks for being a foreign IBAN.

No, I have a residency card and everything they require, but the store will not submit my request until I have a card where the IBAN is displayed on. I ordered a new one and they said it should not be a problem once I have it. Just a bit annoying as now I have to wait for another 10 days or so

@Janaina-Grey-Wolf#77733 I am also in the Netherlands but never experienced this, except for the telco contract. Although last time they just required you to do a verification payment (1 cent) and they didn't check the card or made a copy.
