  • Set a backup account for.... accounts :)

Dear bunq, I love the very cool feature to set a backup account of a secondary pin in the card setting. But, I would like that bunq takes this one step further!

So John, do tell us what you want?
Thank you. I would like the ability to set a backup account on an account instead of a card level.

Sounds interesting.. but why do you want this John?
Good question Well, I use various account for budgeting purposes. It helps me to overview my expenses. So far, so good. With my old ING account it could happens that I overdrawn my account for some reason. I would like this feature on my bunq account as-well. Well, I don't need credit of some kind because I always have enough funds on one of my bunq accounts. So, I would like to be able to set a backup account per account. Sound as a good example of a 'bank of the absolute free!' feature :)

Yes, true! I know you John, you probably also have some design ideas right?..
Ow darn, you know me so well... of course I do:

This seems like a great idea to me. It gives you a way of making sure you always have the money to pay, without the need to necessarily check the balance in the app. It's like overdraft, but backed with actual money instead of credit. Love it!

      Hey John,

this sounds really nice, but I actually like it more to have the secondary account system the way it is now. Let me explain. For my Mastercard I now have it connected to my main account and then with the backup pin to my groceries account so that whenever I am in a supermarket I can pay from this secondary account and while doing it with my Mastercard collect coins ;) (https://together.bunq.com/topic/mastercard-specials-programm-in-germany). My Maestro card on the other hand is also linked to the groceries account but with the second pin is connected to my trips account so that when I am on a trip to Maastricht I can pay with this card. What I would like this a kind of "second" backup account that only jumps into action when there are no funds in the account I want to pay with. For me it would work this way:

Pay in store --> not enough credit on account --> credit gets transferred from backup account to payment account --> payment is completed by the terminal.

This way I am not losing my "organization" because I always pay for groceries from my groceries account and don't want a payment at a supermarket to be shown in this backup account.

      Have a great evening,

      Timo

Could have the option on both the card and the account though.

I quite like the idea too, as I personally try to keep most money in savings accounts. If I somehow would not have enough in my main account, it could auto be added from an other account.

          Hey John,

What can I say? That's of course definitely something we're going to check out!]

          Thanks again!

            I completely agree there!

Hi buddy Timo, always good to hear some feedback from you. You have a pretty good point regarding your need to keep organized. Hope bunq takes that option into account! I sure would love it.

In addition to your great feature proposal, let me add one more thing: When the money is taken from the backup account, maybe there is a way to show a negative balance on the original account. So you won't forget that the money was deducted from the backup account and you have to pay it back. That would completely turn this feature into a good alternative to a real overdraft.

Hi Jan, I love your finishing touch! 👍

I recently made an account called "Buffer" that I use solely as a manual fall back account. Would be amazing if I could turn this in a fully automatic backup account

If you had the If This Then That function you could also setup one backup account for all the accounts to deduct from when the balance turns negative

True, that If This Then That rules system is the best solution for a lot wishes! I hope bunq will implement it soon 👍

That all depends if such feature works during an transaction...

I kind of hope my wish is relative easy to implement because most of the technics are already uses for the current back-up feature.

This wish is of course still open for votes :)

Really cool idea. This basically allows you to set your own ‘maximum debt’. Potentially the backup/buffer account could also be hidden in some way.

                              a month later

Just the other day I ran into this issue. One of my accounts got low on funds fast on a single day. No problems, just a quick refill and done. Fortunately I offen check my balance. But this could go wrong someday, so it would be veryyy nice if you could set a backup account on a account instead of only on a card. I can't use the backup function on my card because I assign to very different accounts to that card (second pin).

Wouldn't this be more manageble with the IF..THEN rules as described in one of the other topics? Personally I get crazy of all settings that interact:

                                - limits; card limit is sufficient but account limit restricts, figure that out when you're in a store

I think it would be a bad move to try to solve everything by using IFTTT. I find this an example of a feature that bunq should build in the regular interface (I even added a design example :)). Just like they did with the backup function on a card level.

IFTTT would be great for the more advanced user who wants to manages every little details themselves :)

                                    5 months later
                                    10 days later

                                    @JohnDo#1036 Unfortunately I can't see your design proposal, but I think it's great :)

So would you rather see this as a per-account-backup or maybe a global backup account for all accounts?
