  • Because of Joint - what card service do I really need? đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș

Hey everyone,

Because of joint we have to make a decision what card we need. We live in Germany and would use Apple Pay too.

What would you recommend?

Cheers

    Hey, if you live in Germany I would recommend a Mastercard and a Maestro (you can have up to 3 cards). Some stores do not accept Mastercard, which is why a Maestro can be useful there. Both can be added to Apple Pay.

      @Michiell#81056 There are some stores in Germany not accepting Mastercard (but Maestro), e.g. the Deutsche Post

        Does the average German (also non-bunqers) aways carry both?

          @senlukas#81060
          Deutsche Post is (?) or at least used to be a nastily “special” case though, in my experience. Their terminals tried to use magstripe, so I couldn't use the bunq maestro to pay there, as bunq had disabled magstripe on their Maestro cards. Otherwise no issues at all with Maestro, unless (obviously) the merchant was girocard-only and didn’t Maestro at all (few).

          @Michiel#81063
          I believe most people do carry both, if they have a credit card at all. I don’t know anybody off the top of my head who wouldn’t.

          In practice though, Mastercard and VISA acceptance have improved considerably over the last few years (and since the EU interchange regulation) in Germany. Most supermarkets, including the discount chains do accept them nowadays. That said, you still might run into girocard-only or even cash-only vendors (take-away food, etc).

          I think you can do well with Mastercard or VISA if you (and as it’s Germany, I would strongly advise people to do) carry some cash. 40 or 50 EUROs more in your pocket will substitute well for a Maestro or German-only girocard. I usually only carry a small card wallet which includes a couple non-payment cards, so am happy to reduce on cards. For most people with their bigger wallets, one additional card doesn't make much of difference, though.

          PS: Don't forget that you want to pay for something online, you can look up your Mastercard card details in the bunq app. So the question might be whether you'd always want to carry your physical Mastercard in every-day life.

            Edeka , Rewe, Aldi , Penny und Lidl akzeptieren alle Maestro und Master Card, auch kontaktlos. Zur Not akzeptieren alle Geldautomaten Master Card und Maestro. Mir ist bislang nichts anderes bekannt.

              @senlukas#81052 That is why I am asking. Point ist with “joint” you can only have 3 cards together.

                Also meint ihr eigentlich sollte man beides haben. Wie löst ihr das bei “joint” ?

                  @Julian-Yellow-Lynx#81093 Also Maestro wird in Deutschland hĂ€ufiger als Mastercard akzeptiert. Dann vielleicht 2x Maestro und 1x Mastercard fĂŒr das außereuropĂ€ische Ausland?

                    Tim changed the title to Because of Joint - what card service do I really need? đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș.

                      The biggest „challenge“ could be fee-free withdrawal of cash. As numerous people already said in different threads, some ATMs charge fees for MC or Maestro but you never know before you tried.
                      So I would recommend to carry both cards in the beginning.
                      Of course if you are lucky enough to not need cash, then I would think you are on the safe side with the Maestro Card

                        Da die virtuellen Mastercards auch mit Curve und ApplePay funktionieren, ist die physische Mastercard meiner Ansicht nach nicht unbedingt notwendig. Deswegen wĂŒrde ich bunq Maestro und die Curve Mastercard empfehlen.

                          @Daniel-Aquamarine-Shark-3429682832#81137 Officially the online MasterCards are not supported for Apple Pay. If you got one that work you're lucky, but there are enough people who can't activate them and were bunq support don't want to help do that either.

                            @JeroenE#81138 Stimmt, auch Curve geht nicht zuverlÀssig. Schade.

                              In Deutschland habe ich die Maestro bisher nie benutzt. Die Akzeptanz von MasterCard ist sehr hoch.
                              Leider wird in Deutschland oft noch eine Girokarte verlangt, die gibt es bei bunq aber nicht.
                              Daher ist die Kombination bunq MasterCard und eine Notfallkarte einer anderen Bank fĂŒr mich bislang unersetzlich. Leider!
                              Aber ich hoffe es wird in Deutschland immer besser.
                              In den Niederlanden wird allerdings öfter Maestro akzeptiert.

                                Danke fĂŒr eure EinschĂ€tzungen!

                                  @Julian-Yellow-Lynx#81212 Ich bin Deutscher und empfehle immer ausreichend Bargeld und dann noch verschiedene Karten bei sich zu fĂŒhren. Auch ist mir ein Konto zu wenig,denn ich sitze nicht gern nur auf 1Ast. ich habe noch ein Zweltkonto bein einer anderenBank mit einer Visacard
