  • Show account balance in iOS widget without being logged into the app.

Now I have to login to see the account balance in the iOS widget, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a widget.

I’ve set my auto logout to 5 minutes because I want to login with my fingerprint. But now the account balance keeps disappearing after 5 minutes.

Hi Dani, I understand your point! However your balance is seen as private and confidential information, which is the reason it disappears after your logout limit expires. But maybe more bunqers would like their balance to be visible without being logged into the app so I've changed your question into a wish for the wishlist! 🙏

I know some people would like it hidden, but it could be an option so you can toggle it on if you want to see it in the widget (:

Wait.. what? There is a widget for iOS and not for android? 😭

Can you change which account your card is connected to from the widget? 🙈

Ja dat weet ik, maar ik wil wel graag de app beveiligd hebben met mijn vingerafdruk.

            Hi Bunq

            1. The use of widget in a phone is having access to some information without requiring opening an app or using authentification.

            2. For login required apps, there is normally a settings in the app which lets widget to show the information without using login info.

            3. And similar to it, showing info in widget of an app could be different in locked and unlocked phone based on a settings in the phone itself or in the app.

            **********

For bunq app in iPhone iOS 11 , I observe that evenif bunq widget is enabled but the information are shown only when the app is open/unlocked by authentification. As soon as locking app or expiring the time of « keeping logged in », the information are not shown in the widget either in clocked or in unlocked phone. Then the widget has no use in such case if an authentification and opening app is required.

It seems bunq app has not been developed correctly on point 2 and eventually on point 3.

            Regards;

I actually like it the way it is. Because I think it’s more secure. Needing to lock back into the bunq app to activate the wigdet also protects me from showing my balance to people when they look at my widgets on the lockscreen.

It's weird how it works now.

When I authenticate (unlock) my phone, the device already knows it's me. When I haven't unlocked the phone, it could be anyone using it, so don't show the balance in the widget. Showing my balance could work the same as iPhone X hiding messages of notifications when the device is still locked. When it authenticates me, it shows the messages.

Would love to see Bunq use this pattern for showing my balance.

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28198 What would indeed be a great addition to the widget!

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28198 Disagree here tbh. What if multiple accounts are logged in on your bunq app? You may have unlocked the phone, but it doesn't mean necessarily that the balances on the widget should show.🙂

@Sander#28260 How many people have multiple accounts? This is an edge case.

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28261 Plenty of people have personal and business accounts.

And besides that, you are free to unlock your bunq app using the settings for longer periods of time if you want. But if you're not logged in to the app, the widget can't securely retrieve your account data. It wouldn't make sense to somehow give the widget access to your data while keeping the bunq app locked.

@Gregory#28262 It’s only about the balance of 1 or 2 accounts. Why should security suffer over a convenience that I set myself (which is showing balance before I’m logged in)? ING has been doing it this way for ages with their apps.

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28265 * Not logged in to the app, but authenticated by the OS with my face/fingerprint/passcode

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28265 When the app can retrieve the balances without being logged in, then basically anyone can? Doesn't really sound like it should be tbh. I agree that it would be convenient. But as mentioned, you can use the logout timer. Furthermore, there are indeed quite some people that have both personal and business accounts, my point is that unlocking a phone is not the same as identifying someone as the account owner. 🙂

@Sander#28291 In the case of multiple accounts, the design team will come up with a good solution. For now I think bunq could disable it or have a setting per account and it shows the balance of the last account that has the option enabled to see balance before login.

I do think unlocking a phone is the same as a “light” version of the account owner, basically only showing me account balance if I set it myself. I really don’t see the problem. People have access to much more personal things on my device if they manage to unlock it, e.g. all my photos, emails, messages, browser, Twitter/Facebook/Instagram DMs…

The way our system is build, it is not possible to retrieve (sensitive/confidential) information without being logged in. This is ofc due to security reasons. By implementing such thing, that allows you to retrieve information without being securely logged in sounds like a no no, at least to me.

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28292 Disabling this means cutting off quite some people from using the app (there are many that use bunq for both personal and business). Without being logged in in the app and still being able to retrieve balances means that there would need to be a security exception, that allows you to always retrieve the balance basically, which is a quite a security flaw imo. Unlocking a phone gives you access to a ton of data indeed, but I do not agree that bunq should trust this to display sensitive data tbh. I personally think that the time setting for auto logout is a nice workaround, for really important actions (new subscriptions etc) you should be prompted for your hand scan / Passphrase / pin anyway, so it's not like you can do literally everything. 🙂

@Tom-Teal-Shark#28292 Agreed with OP & Tom. Current “solution” completely defeats the purpose of having a widget for quick glances without having to open the app to check your balance. I love bunq but this is an area where other banks are ahead 🤷‍♂️
