• bunq Travel Card in ICE BordBistro

Do bunq Travel Cards work in the ICE BordBistro or BordRestaurant? Did anyone get the chance to try this? They need the magnetic stripe and also the ability to do offline charges, but I think as it‘s a „real“ credit card there might be a chance.

@kawie#98105 both are supported by the bunq cards (given that the right countries are enabled for the magstripe). 🙂 offline payments should work after making a transaction by inserting your card in a terminal.

@kawie#98105 The DB only blocks Debit Cards, the Travel Card is a credit card and so it works. Offline and Magnetic Stripe Payments are not depending on the type of card, they could technically even work with prepaid cards.. so even the bunq Debit Cards can both, only the DB blocked them from doing it.

@johannes#98117 Shouldn’t that depend on the service code configuration of the card? Not all cards labeled „debit“ are configured the same way.

@Frank-Maroon-Eagle#98132 That's what I said.. it does not depend on the label, even credit cards could be without an offline limit. bunq supports offline payments since last year, also offline PIN. The thing is, that the DB (German Train Service) blocked some debit cards manually, like the bunq or N26 Debit Cards because they only want Credit Cards to work.

@johannes#98150 That explains why I was able to pay with N26 a couple of years ago.

@Frank-Maroon-Eagle#98151 Yes, worked for me in the past, too, but then they started to block some debit cards manually, probably not going to happen with the bunq Travel Card as it's a credit card.

@johannes#98153 Let’s hope it’s only based on weird principles and not on internal statistics / risk assessment like some car rentals do it.

As far as I know, DB is rolling out new mobile payment devices in 2019 that will accept contactless and debit cards, including Girocard. That should improve acceptance for everyone.

@Frank-Maroon-Eagle#98154 Yes, but only in the restaurant, not to buy a ticket in the train.. for that the travel card will still be better :)

@johannes#98155 I’ve read that all terminals will be updated eventually, starting with restaurants.

@Frank-Maroon-Eagle#98156 Could be, but at first the restaurants, but let's hope they don't ban the travel card as it's a credit card

                        @johannes#98157 🤞

@Frank-Maroon-Eagle#98154 Let's hope this is true 🤞. Their current technology seems ancient and not very accurate. From reading some reports, DB is blocking certain credit cards (I've seen some reports on certain DKB and Advanzia cards) for offline payments onboard their trains while I had no issues using a KBC Ireland debit card with them 🙄

@Thomas-Purple-Lion#98322 My DKB card works there without any problem. It's just Debit Cards.

@johannes#98328 This is wrong. As mentioned, I've made successful offline payments onboard DB trains using debit cards. My "Deutschland-Kreditkarte" issues by Hanseatic Bank is however rejected repeatedly and you'll find similar reports for certain other credit cards on the net. So whatever DB uses to decide whether to accept a card payment, it's definitely not just/credit and I'd say it's about time they get terminals without this foolery :)

@Thomas-Purple-Lion#98503 It's not wrong, but as I said - they do it manually, so they don't really got every debit card banned.

When I traveled with them, they simply rejected any card without embossed name/card number or the ones that stated being electronic.

@LH-Black-Wolf#98588 Outside of Europe there are many credit cards without that, and they do work there. The bunq Travel Card has "Credit" printed on, so it should definitely work.

                                      6 days later

Has anyone tried paying with the Travel Card in the ICE BordBistro?

@LH-Black-Wolf#98588 Will be nice to see, how MasterCard reacts when the first Goldman-Sachs/Apple Credit Cards are rejected. Their premium showcase.

Don’t think, this will happen too often 😉
