I’m travelling to the UK for 2 weeks and my card was just declined on the Eurostar. Any idea why this might have happened? Do I need to activate something to use it abroad? TIA!

Can you give us more information about your type of card. Is it Maestro? Debit MasterCard or Travel Card?
@Anita-Indigo-Panda#101206 Have you used the card before you boarded the Eurostar? Maybe it is not activated yet...
Other option: which country settings does the card have?
That’s for replying so soon guys. I have a maestro and MasterCard- tried both with the same result. Pin accepted but transaction declined. My bf also had the same thing as it’s a joint account.
Cards are all activated. Permitted countries was set to Europe but have now changed to worldwide
@Anita-Indigo-Panda#101225 What type of Mastercard? bunq is not only offering you one type of Mastercard. Was it the debit or credit (travel card)? You can just see "Debit" or "Credit" on the card.
And did you ever used the card at e.g. an ATM before? Was it chip or magstripe?
@Anita-Indigo-Panda#101225 Auf den verknüpften Konten ist auch Geld drauf, die Limits entsprechend auch eingestellt?
It’s a debit card and the limits seem fine as far as I can tell
@Anita-Indigo-Panda#101288 Do you get an event in the app?
@Michiell#101292 No nothing
Probably the debit card was declined because of using an Offline payment terminal, which is unable to check your balance. Normally Creditcards do not have this issue as the payment is guaranteed by the CC company. Some debit cards however do get accepted in the Thalys/Eurostar/Plane, like N26 maybe Bunq should get an guarantee or something in order to make it work
@YTL#101354 Bunq debit cards are usable for offline payments up to 250€
@Matthias-Olive-Hummingbird#101361 As far as I understand: Only for PIN / EMV transactions is there an offline limit. If an the terminal uses magnet stripe and is not online, then it'll only be able to read the service code on the bunq cards, which is 221 and doesn't allow for offline transactions.
Correct me if I understood this wrong.
@Jakob#101387 Not sure about that. Only thing I know about is the EMV offline limit
Did you use the card before? Mine was refused on a plane, but I guess the terminal was offline and I think the first time it needs to be used in an online terminal. Right?
@Freek#101795 This is correct. To load your PIN on your card you need to make a non-contactless payment on an online terminal. After that, the PIN is programmed into the chip and you can even use it on offline terminals (up to €250,-).
Remember that you also have to do this if you've recently changed you PIN via the app
