• Can I use bunq without the app

Hello

I love having a bank with an API i can use :)

however i don't like to use apps, so i wonder if ordering the cards (maestro, mastercard debit and credit card) can i buy online and use the cards like any other bank. again my goal is to use bunq but remove the application from any phone.

I plan to have a joint account, can both of us have cards but never ever the app and operate like an "ordinary" bank? anyone has an experience doing that?

thanks

@gustavo-Orange-Cheetah#109195 I am not 100% sure, but I believe things like Card numbers are not available in the Public API. neither can you use the support chat via the API. 🙂

        about the why

i don't want to have access to my bank account on my phone. I don't think is completely safe.
On the other hand i feel pretty safe running stuff on my computer (i'd save the api keys properly using hardware tokens and so on)

I shouldnt need to contact support if everything goes well :)

I wouldn't mind to use the app on and off, every few months and so on. installing and removing it. but I don't want to have to use it on a daily basis.

Ich verstehe die Bedenken. Aber dann ist eine Smartphone Bank vermutlich nicht die ideale Lösung. Vielmehr eine Direktbank.

@gustavo-Orange-Cheetah#109202 everything regarding security basically falls or stands with the user. Apps can actually be more secure! Desktop computers are typically more vulnerable to viruses/malware/loggers etc. The bunq app sets up a secure channel from the very first minute. I’d argue that the app is even more secure than the API key in this case. With just an API key you can authorize almost everything in the bunq system. When you use the app you’ll need a second layer of authentication for critical operations (like handscan or passphrase). When you use an API key you won’t have this additional security. I’m not saying that you should use the app, I just personally don’t think the statement of pc security vs app security is necessarily accurate. The most important thing obviously is to protect all your devices properly. 👍🙂 There are quite some articles about this online btw, for instance https://www.starlingbank.com/blog/why-mobile-banking-security-can-be-safer-than-online-banking/ 👍😁 the bunq app is safe to use, there are strict audits and everything to ensure that bunq has the security up to the standards. 😁 Keep in mind that bunq is a mobile only bank, so some functionalities might not work completely, but given the recent launch of their online environment I guess theymight even transition away from that. 🙂

@Sander#109207 You could have left it at the first sentence there...

Where a user is involved, functionality is paramount to security in most cases as an application of any kind has to be used first and then has to be secured.

As the topic starter obviously knows, applications have to be fool proof in order to prevent any user from making mayor mistakes that could breach security or cause other forms of damage (like making errors that would cause the loss of money).

The topic starter may feel he is restricted by the protections that are enforced in the app and wishes to use all of its functions without the burden of security as he is able to impose his own security measures on his apparatus.

This user case is what I call a perfect example of the Bank Of The Free 🌈 where people with advanced skills can choose to abandon the off the shelf app that bunq provides and work their own application of their needs. Most users aren’t skilled enough to utilise this possibility and have to stick to the awesome app bunq provides. But hey, when you believe you can be more awesome than the off the shelf app; be my guest.

In the end I am just jealous that I don’t have the skills myself to compile my own way of banking, but cheers to those that are skilled enough!

                  Hi

                  i'll reply to all

                  • for those who say that my mobile is safer than my computer, well. it may not be true. my mobile has embedded the credentials to access bunq, how? i don't know as i haven't seen the code of the app.
i have, i think, pretty good sec ops practices in my computer, and specially is not in my pocket when i go out.

                  • bunq is not an app bank for me, is a bank with an API. i couldn't care less for the app, i couldn't care less for mobile payments. i want a bank with plastic card that i take in my wallet with me and that provides an api endpoint so i can now how much money remains on my account and on what i've spent what i've spent.

I understand other have different feelings about bunq and banking in general, but my use case is simple i want a bank that provides me my data in a format that is easy for me to consume, unlike my previous bank that only provides monthly PDFs.

thank y'all for your answers, i'll update this post in a few months after living only with bunq :)

I think when you already have set everything up and transfer some money monthly to your bunq accounts and have written the card details down I think you can use bunq without ever installing the app again (till you need new cards). You can use the webpage to freeze cards and check your balance/expenses by using your email to login and not the bunq app.

I think in the future you will be using the app once in a while to renew cards, setup new features or something like that, but mostly is a bank with a plastic card 😊

I do prefer the app though, because the app is really nice made and easy to use.

I really like the idea, and when you have the technical skills to properly protect your API key /device then there shouldn't be a problem. I'm very curious to see whether it works for you. 👍 😁 my long post above was partially intended for others users reading along. It's definitely not the case that apps are less secure by definition, I felt like others might get that impression a bit after reading. I would love to see an update about your experiences in a while, I think bunq would also be really interested in that. Best of luck and let us know when you have another question! 😁🌈

I have worked many year in security at the three major banks NL. Then after privately speaking to someone who know about how it works at bunq, I switched ASAP.

It’s more secure! Your money is much saver.

@Pieter-Orange-Leopard#109244 thank you! and we’re happy to have you!

the use of api with the bank would possible be with iDeal from what i understand bunq dont have there own api

Would be nice if you could use the banking in the browser but from my understanding this is not in the works

@Antonio-Jesus-molina-Enriquez-Purple-Butterfly#109335 bunq does have an API, check https://doc.bunq.com for the documentation.

@Antonio-Jesus-molina-Enriquez-Purple-Butterfly#109336 bunq does have a web application since Update 11, see https://bunq.app 👍🙂
