• Why does bunq advertise with Apple Pay in Netherlands?

I switched to Bunq because they clearly claim to support Apple Pay in the Netherlands. Low and behold... it doesn’t work. Even the support team doesn’t rally know what does and doesn’t work. I was told that a MasterCard Debit would work, but it doesn’t.

The information on the site is misleading. Not happy at all!

Hmm...bunq does not support Apple Pay in NL wat the moment. And even if they support Apple Pay in the (near) future, there are not much shops in NL that support the Mastercard debit card. Although, most of iPhone users who want to use Apple Pay can use it with bunq without any issues (i'm one of them). You know what to do ;-)

@Helmer#113885 Hallo Apple Pay wird mit der Bunq Maestro Card unterstützt. Habe es grade festgestellt.

@Michael-Violet-Zebra-2593376251#113877 None officially works with bunq, as the only partner that supports Apple Pay in The Netherlands is a different, big orange bank.

However, Apple Pay always has been expanded later on. I strongly suggest you waiting till bunq will join Apple Pay, as some other banks will do so expectedly.

Now this is your official answer.

@Helmer#113885 Most shops accept Maestro and that’s enough.

Incidentally, considering the bunq update at the 3rd and Amex changing their terms on the 3rd, my money is on bunq releasing or announcing the release of Apple Pay in update 12.

@Michael-Violet-Zebra-2593376251#113877 Where does bunq claim that ApplePay is supported in The Netherlands?

All I can find is claims that bunq supports ApplePay in ‘supported countries’. The Netherlands being not one of them yet.

Bunq did support ApplePay for all its customers in a brief period of a few hours in March 2018, but that seemed a mistake at the time as support for most countries was revoked afterwards.

@Samzoiets#113933 While I'm all for people actually reading the details before signing up for a bank account, if you only read the front page for personal accounts on bunq.com, you might think that Apple Pay is indeed supported in the Netherlands.

The information here that this is only true for certain countries could be added.

@Jakob#113935 Ah, see what you mean. Didn’t see that page for a while and you are right: bunq should add that there are limitations on the availability of ApplePay.

This might be misleading indeed bunq!

@Samzoiets#113933 Eh....Apple Pay still works at bunq (in the supported countries). So, must move to one of the supported countries and you are good to go. But hey...that can be a hassle, so maybe you should wait until after Update 12....

@Helmer#114152 The shown page suggests ApplePay works in The Netherlands, or at least doesn’t mention restrictions on support in The Netherlands.

I know it works fine, even in The Netherlands, as I have been using it for the past nine months without any problem. [...]

As long as bunq can’t support ApplePay in all countries, they should mention any limitations in availability and support. I think it is indeed mor honest to (potential) customers to do so.

Certains d’entre vous ont il réussi à ajouter leur carte Bunq Travel a Apple Pay, perso ça ne fonctionne pas

                            Hi 👋 @Bruno-Navy-Tiger#114310

The bunq Travel Card isn't eligible for Apple Pay yet. Not in any of the supported Apple Pay countries. This should be supported in the (near) future.

                              @Tim#114313 Merci pour ta réponse

With ABN-AMRO joining ING soon in offering Apple Pay in NL, it’s high time that an innovative bank like bunq steps up on this, in the Netherlands as well.

@FourPlus-Clinical-Pink-Shark#118931 ING has some exclusivity time. ABN AMRO has not announced an Apple Pay launch. We'll have to wait before we can use Apple Pay with other banks than ING for now.

@TwitNour#118933 Not announced yet! Let’s cycle back to this soon. And I thoroughly hope Bunq will then follow soon after, as exclusivity time is almost expired.

@FourPlus-Clinical-Pink-Shark#118937 Exclusivity time can be as long as 6 months or even a year (looking at other banks in other countries) so I assume we can't know this for sure. Let's just hope ;)

Since this morning Apple Pay is available on the Netherlands for customers of the other German fintech bank from Berlin!
