Credit and Debit Card?

Heya, I just subscribed to bunq premium and already had my Travelcard / MasterCard Credit beforehand.

Is there any reason why I should get an additional debit card? As far as my thoughts go, I could just use this card (and maybe a virtual one for ApplePay), am I Right?

Or are there use-cases where the debit card makes sense?

First of all, welcome to the Premium club 😉🌈👌

Within Premium you can choose between 3 cards 💳... if you need all three cards all depends on your needs. Some people find it more handy to have several physical cards assigned to different accounts instead of reassigning a single card 💳.

In my case I have a Maestro and a Travel Card. The Maestro is really needed to survive here in the Netherlands :)... The Travel Card is just to have a Mastercard in my wallet. For online purchases I almost always use one of my virtual cards. Makes it also more easy to budget reacurring payments.

Mastercard or Travel Card 💳? I personally would ignore the fact that you can order a Mastercard and always go for the Travel Card 💳. It is basically the same card 💳, but with a far beter acceptance rate.

Jan Regarding Apple Pay: virtual cards can not be used with Apple Pay (at least officially). Apple Pay works currently only with the MasterCard Debit and the Maestro card. Support for the TravelCard is in the work. So at the moment Apple Pay with a MasterCard is the number one reason to order the Debit MasterCard.

Arthur As I live in germany I think Maestro is accepted almost nowhere. I just saw that you only can use the Maestro-Card with ApplePay, is that correct?

Jan Maestro actually has slightly better acceptance than MasterCard here in Germany from my experience. But I use both. You can get both as physical card and also use both with Apple Pay.

That makes bunq the only bank that supports Maestro with Apple Pay in Germany. Sometimes very helpful. A few restaurants here only accept Maestro, not Mastercard.

Ordering a MC Debit Card just to get it into Apple Pay is no option for me at this time (got wayyy too many cards at home 😄), so I'll try the Maestro Virtual Apple Pay next week.

Peter Yeah. I would say the biggest question in Germany is if a store accepts card payments or not. If they do, most of them take Mastercard, Visa, Maestro and V-Pay (and the German system "Girocard"). Some of these shops only take Maestro, V-Pay and Girocard, though, so that's where having a Maestro card can come in handy in Germany. There are also a few shops that limit themselves to just the Girocard, but I personally treat them as "cash-only" then :P

Of course, there are always exceptions. Once I was in a bakery that wouldn't accept my Mastercard, but took my Amex. So, I'm sure there are all kinds of shops. But V-Pay is definitely also widely accepted.

The Mastercard debit card might seem obsolete when you can choose between either a Meastro card and the TravelCard.

Wonder whether there are cases where a Mastercard debit card is still preferable to the TravelCard...

Sam 🇳🇱🇬🇧 In some countries credit card fees are higher than debit card fees, so shops will prefer debit cards. That's one case I can think of.

Maestro wird im Grunde überall akzeptierte, wo auch MasterCard akzeptiert wird.
Für die Händler fallen die Gebühren in der Regel etwas moderater aus.

FloLoL79🌈 Maestro ist ein anderes Thema, da es ein eigenständiges System ist.

In Deutschland kosten Mastercard (Credit) und Debit Mastercard den Händler normalerweise gleich viel. Das ist in Ländern, in denen Debit Mastercard oder VISA Debit die „normale“ Debitkarte ist, anders.
