A “real” credit card?

Does Bunq plan to offer a true credit card i.e. one with a credit line? Say what you want about those cards, but they do come in handy when you have an unexpected expense and you don’t want to (or can’t!!) access funds in a savings account...
Or would that be in contrast to the Bunq philosophy? Or be hard to implement?
(Tried the search function but didn’t find an answer to my question... Feel free to redirect me if I missed a previous discussion...)

bunq doesn’t offer a “real” credit card with credit, or any other forms of a loan for that matter.

It’s against bunq’s philosophy, they don’t want to make money with your money. That’s something from the old banks.

The profit from freedom of choice goes directly to the users. That’s why bunq is a bit more expensive, so you know nothing strange happens to your money.

Lander really the only difference between a so-called "real" creditcard and bunq's creditcard is the creditline behind it. Officially, bunq's Travelcard is a real creditcard: it is branded and recognised as such by terminals. Behind the scenes it is also processed as such. You only have to provide "your own" credit. So, bunq does offer a real creditcard, just the loan/credit is missing (which is countering all bunq's core beliefs, so I wouldn't count on that being introduced any time soon). 😁

Sander Yep, I´ll keep fantasizing then.
But I disagree with you on “that” is the only difference. The other day for example I had to pay an extra fee while renting a car in Barcelona because my card was not a real credit card. Or not to speak about how you are “insured” and you will get your money back with a real credit card in case an airline goes to bankrupt. I have many more examples, but probably that is for another topic.

Lander Honestly, the company should not have done so. I get the confusion, totally, but formally this is a creditcard. Nothing less. Insurance is not related to the card, that’s an additional service provided by some (or rather most?) banks. It’s no requirement to issue “real” creditcards. 🙂

Sander No, again I disagree, it is not an insurance per se what I mean. If you purchase a ticket on your real credit card and don’t receive the service for which you paid, you can initiate a chargeback or dispute with the issuer, which it is not possible to do it with debit cards. It is like if you pay with credit card a flight ticket, and then the airline goes to bankruptcy then the bank gives you the money back, because the airline didn’t charge for the ticket yet. I would gladly copy/ paste some links but I dont wanna risk that they would be censured like in the past happened... so, no links. :)

Lander And why wouldn't that be possible with the bunq Travel Card? In the background it works the same as a credit card, so support should definitely be able to do that for you.

I just wanted to check that you have a bunq Travel Card, and not a Debit Mastercard? You can tell because the Debit Mastercard will say "Debit" on the front, and the Travel Card will say "Credit" on the front.

The bunq Travel Card is a true credit card, without the burden of debt. You can rent cars with it, without extra fees! 🎉

Also, with all bunq cards, if you don't receive the service you paid for, you can initiate a chargeback by contacting support. I believe that's the same for all Mastercard's worldwide, not limited to credit cards. 🙌

Jakob credit card companies protects their customers when a merchant goes bankrupt. the Travel card it is not a credit card per se, so I hesitate that support could give you the money back if and airline disappears from one day to the other... think also that the airline gets the money the same moment when you purchase your ticket. Just google it and it will come hundred of entrances with different explanations.

As I didn't have the situation yet, I can't vouch for what support will do. But this is definitely not correct. The Travel Card really works like a normal credit card in the background, with monthly statements etc. It is just paid off in full automatically by bunq for you every month without you having to do anything.

Edit: And yes, the Debit Mastercard is a different product. Bunq has two kinds of Mastercards in their portfolio, one is debit, and one is credit.

Lander Mich würde interessieren, ob sie überhaupt die travel card verwenden oder die ganze Zeit von der normalen debit card sprechen.

Außerdem denke ich, dass sie grundsätzlich falsche Vorstellungen davon haben, wie Kreditkarten Anbieter funktionieren und was die ganzen Zusatzfunktionen dieser Karten bedeuten und wie sie funktionieren.

Aber ich möchte da nicht wirklich ins Detail gehen, weil ich befürchte, dass dies auf taube Ohren stößt.
Nur soviel. Was sie da im Monat für die Kreditkarte ausgeben, bietet eine richtige Versicherung zu kleineren Preis zuverlässiger.

They don’t. bunq puts aside the value of all your payments in that month and then settles the “debt” at once every month. But since all payments have been set aside already bunq can settle this automatically, you won’t even notice as you have been charged. As suggested above, just try the card. It sounds a bit like you haven’t done so yet, so likely the card will work just fine for you. And if it doesn’t then we and the Support chat 💬 are always here to help you. 👍🙂

Jakob Ik heb het al wel eens meegemaakt. Dat was trouwens met de debit card, de Travel Card bestond toen nog niet. Je neemt contact op met support, legt het uit, geeft aan dat de winkelier niet wil helpen (in mijn geval gewoon geen reactie meer gaf) en na een tijdje zijn de betalingen geannuleerd.

Dat ging allemaal min of meer hetzelfde als ik wel eens heb gedaan bij een andere aanbieder van MaaterCard. Dat is wel een credit card, maar ook daar moet je zelf naar de winkelier enzovoort.

Het grootste verschil was dat je bij bunq alles in de chat moet doen en bij de ander kan je bellen. Maar voor de teruggave moest ik bij de ander een formulier invullen, ondertekenen en opsturen.

I do think Bunq created a difficult product. Yes, it’s a “real” credit card, but people expect a line a credit to go with that. At least I do, but I guess I’m older than most of you... 😊.
And credit is not equal to debt. Use it wisely and you can benefit from that “financial buffer”. Anyway, doesn’t really matter. Bunq will likely never go that way as it conflicts with their business philosophy. Fine for me.

I disagree with it being a difficult product. Quite the opposite actually. The only thing everyone should realize, is that you have to make sure yourself to have sufficient funds on your travel card.
If another bank’s credit card allows you €2000 credit, then you expect to be able to use that amount. If you go over that amount, that credit card will simply fail.
So if you want to be able to use €2000 credit on your travel card, all you have to do is make sure you have €2000 debit on your travel card account.
It really is that simple! Not difficult and not complicated. You are your own credit supplier.
