• Confused by the cards

Hello,
I’m new to Bunq and I’m a little bit confused about the cards.

I can choose between an „online“ card, „debit maestro“ card, „credit“ card and „debit mastercard“ card.

  1. With „online“ card I only get a virtual card and no plastic card, right?

  2. What type is the „online“ card? Visa or Mastercard?

  3. The „debit maestro“ card is like the normal bank card you usually get when you have a bank account, this is not a credit card, right?

  4. What is the difference between „credit“ card „debit mastercard“ card? They both are credit cards, because you get an credit card number and not an IBAN.

I hope anybody can help me to understand everything.

Thanks!

    1. That is correct
    2. It is a MasterCard
    3. That's correct
    4. Sort a right. The difference is in acceptance. The creditcard(travel card) behaves like a debit MasterCard but to the merchant it look like a creditcard. This gives you better acceptance, the ability to place reservations on your card without actually having credit.

So in practice the debit MasterCard en creditcard(travel card) are the same. With the only exception that the travel card does not YET have apple en Google play and the debit MasterCard does

      1: Yes
      2: Online card is Mastercard
3: Yes, in dutch it's called a "Pinpas"
      4:

"They both are credit cards, because you get an credit card number and not an IBAN".

No, that's not the definition of a credit card. You don't get a credit card number, you get a card number. Also, IBAN has nothing to do with a card. An account has an IBAN, a card does not. But a card can be connected to an account. The difference between the credit mastercard and the debit mastercard is that the terminal recognized the first one as a credit card, and the second one as a debit card. For you they work both as a debit card.

Hi David, I'll try to explain everything :)

        1. Yes, an online card is just a virtual card, but you can have more of them for no additional costs compared to regular cards. They also cannot (officially at least) be used for Apple Pay etc., so their main use if for online shops or subscriptions. But you don't have to use them if you don't want to.

        2. The online cards are Mastercards.

        3. A Maestro card is always a debit card, that's correct. Depending on where you're living, your "normal" bank cards might be Maestro cards, too. But yes, they work exactly like that.

        4. For you as a user, both of them work just like debit cards. As soon as you buy something, the amount is booked from your account, never to be seen again (except if you get a refund, or if a hotel/rental car deposit is returned). For the merchant, they are pretty much the same, as they are both Mastercards. But one of them is a "Debit Mastercard", and the Travel Card looks just like a normal Mastercard does. Some merchants might insist on you using a "real" credit card, and in these cases, using the Travel Card might help you. But even with the Travel Card: It does look like a regular credit card to a merchant, but it works like a debit card for you. You don't need to pay monthly and you can't fall into any debt.

By the way: A Maestro card also doesn't have a fixed IBAN number, they have an internal number just like credit cards have. They are usually just not printed on the card itself, as Maestro cards often can't be used for online shopping (this depends on the country, though). The IBAN printed on the card is just for your reference, and you can change the actually associated bank account from the app anytime.

So with bunq, all cards work pretty much the same for you. Just use the one that works best with the shops/merchants that you're shopping at :)

Edit: Only got third place. Too bad :D

Thank you all for explaining. I think I understood everything now.

Great clear responses and tips. Thanks people. I joined Bunq yesterday.
What I think is still unanswered is whether the 5 Online cards behave like a debit card or credit card to merchants.

@New-Cyan-Bear-1789752248#181145 Online Cards that have been created during V2 behave like Debit Cards to merchants. New online cards created in V3 behave like a Credit Card.

By the way, now I have a new debit card linked to my account with the name: bunq account. It is not a virtual card and it is not a plastic card. What is this new card?

@Francesc-Golden-Jaguar#181150 How did you create this card? And what are the first 8 digits of its PAN?

                    @Jakob-Y#181147 Thanks man.
