Using your card

💳 Do I need cash in Austria, or can I use my card everywhere?

Card is accepted almost everywhere in Austria.

All EU mobile plans should let you roam for free.

If you don't have an EU plan, you can learn about your local SIM card options here.

Useful things to know

💁‍♀️ How does tipping work?

Tipping is fairly common in Austria. After a nice meal, you would usually tip somewhere from 10-12%.

Check if the restaurant has already added a service charge before tipping. If they have, you don't need to tip.

When being served in a cafe, it is common to round up the bill to the next Euro.

🍺 How much does a 0.5L beer cost?

€4,00

🍽 How much does an average meal cost?

€10,00

🚨 What’s the emergency number?

112

🔌 What type of plug do they use?

This one! It’s the standard European plug.

🚗 What side of the road do they drive on?

They drive on the right side of the road here.

🗺 How do I navigate my way around?

Google and Apple Maps both work well in Austria.

Otherwise, we recommend Rome2Rio as the best way to find out how to get anywhere. It even tells you the cost of each option. 🙌

If you're in Vienna, head to Café Central for an amazing Apple Strudel in a historic atmosphere.

How can I get tickets for the public transport?

I personally recommend the OEBB ticket shop or it's app for iOS and Android.
"ÖBB" is the official Austrian train service and their ticket system is available in German, English and Italian.
It offers you tickets for most of Austria, not just train tickets, also city-tickets (busses, metros, trams, ..).

It's really easy to get to your ticket:

    • Search for a connection in e.g. Google Maps (G Transit works well in Austria)
    • Enter your start and destination stations in the app and it will show you the connections and prices
    • Click on the connection you want to take and check the available tickets
    • Buy the ticket by using your bunq Mastercard or Online Card. You only need your name + email, you don't need to be from Austria.
    • (Optional) Save your details for the next time.

You'll get the ticket as a PDF (you can show your PDF ticket on your phone) or you can have it with you in their app, no need to print it out!
The app also shows you real-time information about your connection (if available), it's like a "travel companion"! 😀

Click here (English), to find out more about their ticket app.

A few tips for your ticket from/to the Vienna Airport to/from the city centre:

      • Don't use the "CAT (City Airport Train)", it needs a special more expensive ticket and isn't really worth it.
      • The Vienna Airport is not in Vienna, so you need an extra ticket.
      • If you already have a ticket for Vienna the trip shouldn't cost you more than €2, add "Ticket Stadtverkehr Wien" (city-ticket Vienna) as a Discount at the ticket machine (or in the OEBB app mentioned above) to get the €2 ticket.
      • If you don't have a ticket for Vienna it shouldn't cost you more than €5, even for the long distance trains ("Railjet") with a stop at the Vienna Main Station!
      • You can also buy your time ticket for Vienna and the ticket from the Airport to the city centre at the same time.
Just tap on "More Services" -> "Vienna" at the ticket machine or in the app to see the time tickets, even at the airport. Add it to your €2 ticket.
      • Travelling late/early from/to the airport and the trains are not operating yet? The "Vienna Airport Lines" bus also operates at night, but costs €8. Learn more

Little tip for your time ticket for Vienna:

The Weekly Ticket (7 days) is valid from Monday (00:00) -> Monday morning (08:59) and costs exactly the same as the 72 Hours ticket, about €18.
Keep that in mind, it might be helpful depending on when and how long you're in Vienna and can save you some money! 😀

Little warning for regional trains in Vienna:
Your ticket for Vienna works with all "Wiener Linien" lines (metro, busses, trams) and "ÖBB" trains ("S-Bahn") and busses ("Postbus") operating in Vienna, but "Westbahn" does not accept your normal Vienna ticket.
So if you see a "Westbahn" train but you want to stay in Vienna, don't bord the train, they are just picking up passengers who want to leave Vienna! 😀

Sparkasse charged me € 3.90 withdrawal fee in ötztal. Don't know if it's universal of only in the Tirol region

                a year later

I am in Vienna and so far 70% of restaurants only took cash. In Wachau, in the country side, it was probably 50:50.
BAWAG / PSK in Wachau and Raiffeisen Bank in Vienna were free of charge.
Sparkasse, Volksbank and Bank 99 would have charged around 5€. Euronet was around 2€

@Jan-Nicolas-Green-Eagle#278887 Huh? I spent a week in Vienna last year without using cash once... I was able to use my cards everywhere
