  • 🇨🇿 Czech Republic: bunq Community Travel Tips

✈️ Heading to Czech Republic? We've gathered some tips from the bunq community to make sure your trip is the smoothest it can be. 😎

Check them out below! 🌈 👇

Using your card

💳 Do I need cash in Czech Republic, or can I use my card everywhere?

Most places in the Czech Republic take cards, however smaller shops may require cash. Make sure you always carry some on you

💰 What currency do they use here?

The currency here is Czech koruna. The symbol is Kč or CZK.

🏧 Which ATM’s can I use for free?

The bunq community has reported free withdrawals at these ATMs.

  • Airbank
  • CSOB
  • Fio
  • Komerční Banka
  • Raiffeisen
  • Unicredit Bank

💵 If I want cash, how much should I take out of an ATM?

500 CZK should be enough for a few days, since you can use your card for nearly everything.

💳 Should I choose local currency or Euros when paying?

If you're asked to choose between local currency and Euros, always choose local currency.

That way bunq does the conversion for you, and you get to take advantage of the best rates with bunq ZeroFX.

Staying connected

📱 Can I roam, or should I get a local SIM?

All EU mobile plans should let you roam for free.

If you don't have an EU plan, you can learn about your local SIM card options here.

In general, it doesn't matter whether you use Maestro or Mastercard, but you can still find hotels that want to put the card number into their system in case of issues and they might get annoying about Maestro cards without any.

In case you need to exchange cash be very careful when choosing an exchange office as there is a lot of exchange-related scam in Prague city centre. It's much better to use ATM (and of course refuse the offered conversion rate).

You can pay with Euros in many places, but the conversion rate is usually not very good and you will get your change in CZK. As a funny tidbit, if you are at the airport with dire need of CZK it's better to buy a burger at McDonald's and pay with EUR than to use the exchange offices. As a rule of thumb though, you should avoid exchanging or withdrawing money at the airport.

If you need public transport tickets in Prague you can pay with card at some machines. If you feel adventurous you can also download an app called "PID Litacka" and you can buy electronic tickets there using your card. Note though that you need to activate them at least 2 minutes before boarding the tram/bus or entering the metro and activation requires internet connection.

Small note: The socket displayed in the article is technically not correct. Type E is used in CZ while the picture shows type F. Type E uses a pin instead of the clips for grounding. At the same time though the plugs are mutually compatible.

And don't just stay in Prague, there is a lot of beautiful nature and history in the Czech Republic.

Bunq werkt echt super hier in Praag. Tsjechië heeft prima mobiel netwerk (zelfs in metro). Allen op de universiteit accepteerde ze alleen maar cash in de kantine maar de rest kan je overal betalen met je bunqkaart.

For traveling with train you can use app Můj vlak that is also in english and has Apple pay

In prague and some cities you can buy groceries online on Rohlik.cz. They have website so you can translate.

              Uber/Liftago works well there

Hoppygo or Anytime for car sharing

Alza.cz is the biggest ecommerce site in the Czech Republic.

I was charged 150Kč withdrawing a small amount at ČSOB ATM.

CSOB, Raiffeisen and UniCredit all charge CZK 150 if you decline conversion. However, KB ATMs don't charge anything, even if you decline conversion.
