  • πŸ‡πŸ‡Ί Hungary: bunq Community Travel Tips

✈️ Heading to Hungary? We've gathered some tips from the bunq community to make sure your trip is the smoothest it can be. 😎

Check them out below! 🌈 πŸ‘‡

Using your card

πŸ’³ Do I need cash in Hungary, or can I use my card everywhere?

Most places accept card, expecially in areas like Budapest.

It's always a good idea to have some cash on you as a backup, just in case.

πŸ’° What currency do they use here?

The currency here is Forint. The symbol is Ft or HUF

🏧 Which ATM’s can I use for free?

The bunq community has reported that all major bank ATM's here are free to use. πŸŽ‰

πŸ’΅ If I want cash, how much should I take out of an ATM?

15.000 HUF should be enough for a few days, since you can use your card for nearly everything. Don't worry, that's only about €45.

πŸ’³ Should I choose local currency or Euros when paying?

If you're asked to choose between local currency and Euros, always choose local currency.

That way bunq does the conversion for you, and you get to take advantage of the best rates with bunq ZeroFX.

Staying connected

πŸ“± Can I roam, or should I get a local SIM?

All EU mobile plans should let you roam for free.

If you don't have an EU plan, you can learn about your local SIM card options here.

Useful things to know

πŸ’β€β™€οΈ How does tipping work?

It is normal to tip in Hungary unless you're unhappy with the service. A normal tip is 10% of the meal price.

If you can, tip in cash. It has a better chance of going to the service staff instead of the management.

Service charges that get automatically added are becoming more common. One bunqer reported they were charged a 20% service charge without being asked recently.

If a service charge is added to your bill, there's no need to tip.

🍺 How much does a 0.5L beer cost?

€1,20

🍽 How much does an average meal cost?

€5,50

🚨 What’s the emergency number?

112

πŸ”Œ What type of plug do they use?

This one! It’s the standard European plug.

πŸš— What side of the road do they drive on?

They drive on the right side of the road here.

πŸ—Ί How do I navigate my way around?

Google and Apple Maps both work well in Hungary.

Otherwise, we recommend Rome2Rio as the best way to find out how to get anywhere. It even tells you the cost of each option. πŸ™Œ

My bunq card gets declined everywhere (hungary is whitelisted on my card) how come?

@New-Aquamarine-Badger-926751333#260106 What type of card are you using? Maestro or Mastercard?

@thijsoost#260107 Maestro, but when I use my card from the Rabobank, it works (which is also maestro)

@New-Aquamarine-Badger-926751333#260108 That's strange! Then your bunq Maestro should also work. Do you see an error message on the payment terminal or in the bunq app?

@thijsoost#260111 Nope nothing, not in the app nor the terminal. It just says declined. I’ve tried it on many terminals tough (also with different vendors) but it keeps saying it’s declined.

@New-Aquamarine-Badger-926751333#260114 Maybe there is difference in acceptance of bunq Maestro and Rabobank Maestro cards, and maybe only a bunq Mastercard works in Hungary. You could try contacting bunq support: http://together.bunq.com/d/32181

The is no bank named Majot Bank in Hungary… Could you find out what was meant exactly?

@New-Violet-Warthog-918475492#260250 Simple typo: "all major bank ATMs here are free to use." That means: big banks/popular banks.
