Using your card

💳 Do I need cash in Morocco, or can I use my card everywhere?

Cards are accepted, but small vendors may only take cash, especially in markets

Not all payment terminals work well with mobile wallets such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.

💰 What currency do they use here?

The currency here is Moroccan dirham. The symbol is د.م. or MAD.

🏧 Which ATM’s can I use for free?

The bunq community has reported free withdrawals at these ATMs.

  • BMCI (BNP Paribas)
  • Credit Agricole
  • Al Barid Bank

💵 If I want cash, how much should I take out of an ATM?

1 000 MAD should be enough for a few days.

💳 Should I choose local currency or Euros when paying?

If you're asked to choose between local currency and Euros, always choose local currency.

That way bunq does the conversion for you, and you get to take advantage of the best rates with bunq ZeroFX.


Staying connected

📱 Can I roam, or should I get a local SIM?

Most EU mobile plans will charge you for roaming.

Wifi is readily available, especially in coffee shops.

💁‍♀️ How does tipping work?

The service fee is sometimes charged to your bill. If this happens there's no need to tip on top. Otherwise, leaving a few dirhams on top of the bill is appreciated.

🚨 What’s the emergency number?

There are different numbers for the different services here.

  • 🚓 Police: 19
  • 🚑 Ambulance: 15
  • 🚒 Fire: 15

🔌 What type of plug do they use?

This one! It’s the standard two pin plug.

🚗 What side of the road do they drive on?

They drive on the right side of the road here.

🗺 How do I navigate my way around?

Google and Apple Maps both work well.

👀 Any other good tips?

Visit Chefchaouen, a refugee camp back in the days. Most of the buildings are painted in blue. Go find out the reason!

    If you’re taking a taxi, make sure to check whether they have a meter aka “compteur” installed and ask them to switch it on, otherwise you’ll easily be asked to pay 10x the price.
    Small taxis are within the city, aka “petit taxis” and large taxis are for going to the airports in most cities.
    You should never be charged more than 30DAH with a petit taxi.

      UPDATE:
      BMCI bnp paribas funktioniert problemfrei. Stand heute akzeptieren viele Händler, kleine Restaurants und auch viele öffentliche Einrichtungen (z. B. für Eintritt in die Paläste in Marrakesh) nur cash - also habt immer 200 bis 500 MADs in bar dabei.

      Informiert Euch vorher in der Unterkunft nach der "city tax": Diese wird pro Nacht und Person erhoben - dafür spart man sich das Visum 🤗

        Bin zurzeit in Marokko Nador, war bei zwei Bankautomaten und die wollten kein Geld ausgeben aber beim dritten in der Stadtmitte ging es dann ohne Probleme. Die zwei anderen Automaten waren außerhalb und somit denke ich das es am Automaten lag.

          Mittlerweile klappt jeder Automat in MAROKKO. Zum Glück habe ich bunq dabei. Stecke in MAROKKO fest da es keine Rückflüge gibt.

            Bunq begleitet mich auch in einer schweren Zeit 👍🏼 danke für die gute Arbeit bunq und das man auch in Marokko Geld ohne Probleme abheben kann. Danke bunq 5*****

              Ich muss wirklich bunq loben 👍🏼 lade online mit meiner Karte, Internet auf und alles funktioniert. Geld abheben funktioniert ohne Probleme. Super Karte und super bunq 👍🏼

                @Phil-Lord#150385 Hallo, Können Sie mir sagen, vor welcher Bank Sie Ihre Auszahlung vornehmen könnten? und wenn es nicht funktioniert, welche Meldung der Verteiler anzeigt

                  @Pascale-Violet-Butterfly#158932 Hallo, bis jetzt hat jede Art von Bank geklappt. Bin in einer Kleinstadt und trotzdem habe ich keine Probleme damit. Am Anfang hatte ich mit zwei Banken Probleme aber das lag nicht an der bunq Karte sondern am Automaten. Andere Karten gingen da auch nicht. Ich stecke immer noch in Marokko fest und Bekannte schicken mir Geld auf bunq und alles funktioniert mit bunq super 👍🏼 mach dir keine Sorgen falls du mal hier bist. Die Karte geht bis jetzt überall. Bei mc Donalds kann man damit auch ohne Probleme bezahlen.
