Using your card

πŸ’³ Do I need cash in Monaco, or can I use my card everywhere?

You can use cards pretty much everywhere, but itΒ΄s a good idea to have some cash with you just in case.

πŸ’° What currency do they use here?

The currency here is Euro. The symbol is € or EUR.

🏧 Which ATM’s can I use for free?

The bunq community hasn't reported reported any free ATM's here yet. If you find one, help other bunqers by sharing it here!

πŸ’΅ If I want cash, how much should I take out of an ATM?

40 EUR should be enough for a few days, since you can use your card for nearly everything.

πŸ’³ Should I choose local currency or Euros when paying?

If you're asked to choose between local currency and Euros, always choose local currency.

That way bunq does the conversion for you, and you get to take advantage of the best rates with bunq ZeroFX.

    5 months later

In most car parks in Monaco, only the Maestro works if you want to pay from your car directly at the exit (sometimes even contactless).
At the ticket machine, any MasterCard will work.

I Periodicly go to Monaco (almost every month). Here my 2 cents:

Cash is indeed not nececary, almost everywhere you can pay with the Maestro, Mastercard debit, Mastercard credit and Greencard. (Yes your backup Visa works on most locations as well) Most coffee bars also accept apple pay directly. Some restaurants and parking area's even only accept cards and no cash!
Car rentals only accept physical Mastercard credit, the hertz and europcar at the airport had no issue that the card numbers were not in relief. (like some countries have troubles with following mastercard new rules)

A tip at a restaurant and hotel is quite normal there of about 5-10%. I learned that tips are appriciated in cash when you pay by card.

Most ATM's ask quite some fee to withdraw from (~4%), in my experience, most groceries stores are very helpfull when you ask them to withdaw 50-100€ with your purchase. That gets you going for a few days.

I advice to use Monaco telecom instead of Orange. In my experience Orange has very bad reception in buildings due to the big distances of cellular towers. Monaco telecom is always working very well. And is maybe max 3-5% more expensive.

In my experience, beer is never €7,60 in monaco, easier ~10€ and a meal easier to 35€.

Additional to the Opera, the harbor is an amazing place to have a lunch, great view with all the yachts!
