• Suspected bunq DDoS attacker arrested

Hi bunqers,

Today it was announced that Jelle S., the prime suspect in the DDoS attacks against bunq, has been arrested. As you all know, Dutch banks and tax offices have been frequent targets of these cyber attacks for months at an end.

The attacks against us started in September of 2017. During these attacks we always worked around the clock to make sure our users are affected as little as possible. We've been keeping you up-to-date every step of the way, you can find more info here about the steps we took at the timeπŸ‘.

We were quick to figure out who it was and collected the necessary evidence. Thanks to the great relationship we've established with the police, we were able to solve this case quickly πŸ™Œ. You can find the police's press release here.

Attackers can use the internet with high levels of anonymity, which makes it all the more exceptional that a suspect has been caught. We're happy to have helped the police with this case. Please let us know if you have any questions! 😊

Unfortunately the "slap on the wrist"-method didn't quite work:

Wonder what his reasons were. Probably the same as all ddossing kids: puberty, boredom and watched too much Mr. Robot.

Will bunq offer this one a community service as well, or can the judge decide?

I just wanted to say that I am happy that the person responsible was caught :) And that know the DDOS attacks will finally and hopefully have an end. So the bunq team can get some sleep :)

Congratz! Hope you'll all be able to get a little bit more sleep :)

It looks like it is the same guy... unfortunately.

Please all stand up and give bunq a round of applause! Job well done! And exemplary communication! πŸ‘ 🌈

This is why I thought all along that the slap on the wrist in 2017 was a bad idea. If you’re 18 and you want to enjoy the benefits of being an adult you also need to deal with the responsibility. It set the wrong example for others, and apparently for himself too. Crimes must be pursued to the maximum extent of the law.

Dit keer wel aangifte of gaan jullie weer alleen gezellig een regenboogtaart 🌈 eten? 😊

bunq heeft al aangifte gedaan.. daarom is politie ook met onderzoek begonnen en is hij van zijn bed gelicht.

The apprehension of this person is directly related to the work we've been doing since last year. First finding the person, then compiling evidence against him.

I see, according to a comment on Tweakers the same guy was behind another attack at the end of 2017 and that time bunq did press charges and compiled evidence. Nice work bunqers and bunqerettes!

                          πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Interesting read (dutch) on how tweakers also found out who initiated these attacks.

This is a very nice piece. And although the slap didn't work it sure established that Jelle needs some harder punishment or re-education. I still think the slap was the right thing to do. Very stupid of Jelle to waste his precious second chance like this.

This was the most impressive thing about how Bunq handled the situation for me. Makes me very proud to be a customer of Bunq. So many companies/organisations always go straight to prosecuting for cyber crimes, which puts many talented people in prison for crimes that don't really have a severe impact (compared to physical violence). At least they tried.

Exactly what I was thinking. Some people will never learn. Good thing bunq did prosecute this time.

He will have to face the consequences then... Not very sensible after getting away so easy the first time.

Thanks for the link, can confirm the nice read! ;)

Cool to get some insights and even see how small mistakes can potentially add up until they become your end. On the other hand: If the attacker would not have gotten out of his cover, the cat-and-mouse game could have went on for much longer.
