• Urgent! How to get money in Cuba

Sorry for the long text, but hoping someone can help me because I am down to my last money, unable to withdraw any cash and bunq support is not providing any workable solution so far:

Anyone has any experience with withdrawing cash in Cuba with the travel card? Officially it should work with the travel card but I have been in the country one week now and no luck with any of the ATMs: denied everytime, without getting error messages in the bunq app). Inside the banks the staff does not the card as a credit card because according to them there is information missing (such as my signature).

Bunq support explained me that probably all atms are offline, which is why I dont get any messages. Therefore, I can only withdraw up to 250 EUR per withdrawal AND only the most common currencies (e.g EUR, Dollars). However the atms and banks here can only give me the local currency (CUC)

(Of course tried all atms available and enabled Cuba in the permitted countries)

Familie geld laten sturen naar een western union locatie of iets?

Sorry to hear about your situation. Have you've encountered any online terminals at shops perhaps? You will know that it's an online terminal when you receive a push notification immediately after the payment. Maybe they will be helpful and allow you to withdraw some money there?

Also, it's very strange the banks don't want to cooperate. The Travel Card is made with the newest Mastercard specifications that don't require a signature field or embossed numbers, but I don't think it's strange Cuba is a little outdated with that.

@Geertjan#141744 Thanks! I tried it in one city but the western union there only let me change money. Trying to get to another city with western union to try again. Only 3 offices in the country I believe.

@Tim#141745 Thanks! Yes luckily I found one shop yesterday that accepted credit cards and they were so nice to let me do exactly this, however only for 40 EUR. (All they could spare). However hooing there are additional options as there are only some shops which have such a terminal and most don’t want to do thisor have very little cash!

Hey @Koen-Turquoise-Kiwi#141743, I'm curious about the amounts that you've tried to withdraw at the ATMs in Cuba so far. I would suggest to try low amounts as that usually works best (from our own experience). If you try withdrawing €50 or in any case an amount lower than €100 then you have better chances to see a successful transaction!

We also checked other options that you have in Cuba to get cash: you can try going to CADECA, which are the official currency exchange points, and get cash over the counter.

Finally, thanks for sharing this experience with us! Thanks to your feedback we're able to improve usage of our cards further to ensure that you can pay freely all around the world 🙏

              Hi Koen,

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing troubles. Cuba unfortunately is known for its horrible card acceptance (we show a warning in the app to help inform you beforehand). You can also get more info on: https://together.bunq.com/d/18696-cuba-bunq-community-travel-tips

After reading your message I assembled our core backend crew to see what we could do. What we came up with, in addition to Matteo's useful remarks, is to give you a list of places we have seen successful transactions:

Please be sure to select 'USD' as currency (or 'EUR').

              Good luck!
              Ali

😉 Succes!

@Matteo-Indigo-Akita-2429416581#141748 Hi thanks! I’ve tried all kinds of amounts, mostly low (less than 100 EUR) but probably because its offline atms and the only possible currency is the local currency it’s not working, regardless of the amount.

I have tried to go to cadeca and other offices, but most do not accept the card as an official credit card and say I can only use the atms. 2 accepted to try the transaction but it failed (they could not choose which currency, only the local currency CUC is possible)

@Mtouch#141754 Trying this! Should be possible, but until now most say that I should just go to an atm / that they don’t have enough cash / don’t want to do this.

                      @Ali#141750 Hi!

Perhaps I overlooked but I believe I never received / saw this warning in the app. Thank you for the extra effort, will definitely make sure to try those places. Until now I have never gotten the option to choose which currency I’d like, all is in the local currency but I hope those places do give that option.

Also: perhaps good to update the ‘Cuba feed/blog’ on the community. I read that beforehand but I didn’t read anything about low / no card acceptance in banks and (offline) atm withdrawals being impossible in Cuba so I assumed it would not be a problem.

                        @Koen-Turquoise-Kiwi#141789 Hi Koen!

We have seen those locations in our database so that means that they are online...

As for the community topic if you have suggestions / tips please do add them; for everyone’s benefit :)

                        Good luck!!!
(Btw travel card ís a credit card)

In that case I will try those places again. However strange if they are online that I still do not receive error messages from my previous tries?.

I know the travel card is a credit card, but until know all bank and change office employees in Cuba do not accept it as such. Mainly because 1) the layout of the card is quite different than most common credit cards and 2) it doesnt have all information most credit cards have (the actual cvc code, a signature etc)

                            Hi Koen!

Did you get your money, one way or the other? Please let us know how this "adventure" ended.

Hope all went well in the end.

@Koen-Turquoise-Kiwi#141791 Hoe is het afgelopen Koen? Goed, hopelijk....

Fijne avond.
