bunq
In my opinion, this update has been the most rushed delivery in the history of (financial) software.
How long was it? A month? Have you ever considered feedback during the beta? All of it?
The update is bad. You don't overhaul an app moving everything all at once. This has been an insane product decision.
All the following points are my personal feeback on the design choices of v3.
Hide balance
The functionality supposed to be there to QUICKLY hide the amounts in your possessions now requires 2 taps. The button to access it is in the far upper-right corner of the UI, do you have ANY idea how big smartphones are there? Do you think people always have two hands at their disposal?
Trees
Why in the world do I have a tree counter in my banking app if I am not a Premium SuperGreen user? I am not and I don't want to be. Maybe, I use Ecosia; maybe, I do my private contributions elsewhere; maybe, 17 €/pm is a lot for my banking.
This should be an opt-in feature.
Cards
Not only the UI view is total nonsense -how many cards does your average user have? 🤔- but it's also broken.
While exploring the beta I was suggested to create a Travel Card despite having one already. I can't remove it. (The web app tells me the card is frozen.)
The release (stable?) version doesn't show the online cards anymore. I went to ( + ) → Virtual Cards
and I activated them again. Surprise-surprise, I now have my old cards and a new one. Which, again, cannot be removed.
There is also no distinction anymore between virtual cards and physical ones.
The almighty, colorful, contextual + button
In the middle of everything. It bugs me so much I can't stand it but let's not be biased.
Why the "plus"? Does it give a clue of what it does?
- In the main screen is "Explore" (this menu is a mess with tabs that don't slide?)
- In the cards screen is (correctly) "Get an extra card"
// Here plus is correct
- In the card screen is "Actions" !!! Curious enough, the "Add your card to Apple Pay" is not in the Actions screen. Consistency?
- In the total/account screen is "Options".
To me, it looks like a drawer. When you don't know where to place something in the UI, just put it in the drawer.
There it is! That plus means "more".
Wait! Then, in a banking app, the possible financial actions are a "secondary function"? It may be debatable but I think the old view was better designed, UX-wise.
Even admitting this "more" button is smart and the list of movements is the primary focus, do you realize the FAB is right over them?
Because of this drawer, many screens in the app are empty.
- If you inspect a payment, the details are hidden inside an accordion leaving half of the screen dark gray.
- The same happens in the cards view when you are a normal person and you have only 2 cards, maybe some virtuals as well.
- If you are on the main screen, you haven't enabled the "Total" view and you only have 1 or 2 accounts, half of the screen is black.
The "Us"
Honestly, I don't like Instagram. A company blog can make sense but not as the second functionality (main navigation entry). It should be the last.
Camera scan is by far more important and since I am your stakeholder and the "Profile" shows the pie chart of my expenses, Profile is more important than Bunq's Blog.
Here, the more button makes sense. Have you designed everything around this new Us screen?
Why "Create a Common Goal" and "Create Tribe" are so hidden? There is way, WAY, too much emphasis on that Instagram feed rather than these new customer features.
The all-in-black
That should reflect the system color scheme. Why force your users to a total-black experience?
The toaster button in the upper corner (part 2)
This has been a workaround, admit it.
It's there in only two three screens for features not considered important. This is the definition of more button 👈🏻
My account details and membership management are important in my profile view.
Same as a privacy feature like "hide balance" that, in my opinion, should be in the force-touch menu of each account.
Thank you for reading this wall of text, if you'll do.
