  • Getting cash into a Bunq account

First of all, I KNOW there are multiple threads here covering this topic. I've just spent the last three hours calling, tweeting and walking around Amsterdam to various cash exchange services, banks and ATMs based on those old threads.

I'm posting this partly as a plea to Bunq to figure out a workaround for this extremely obvious and annoying problem they have created; but more so that folks who have this problem in the future have more current information than is currently available here.

I have a bunq account in the Netherlands, an ING account in Belgium (where I frequently work) and a Transferwise account to move money between those and an American account. I also have a big pile of cash thanks to a landlord who decided that paying back my deposit in cash was easier for her. I had no idea what an absolute nightmare it would be for me.

There is no way, that I can see, to take cash to any ATM, any in-person cash exchange/transfer service or to any live bank teller/branch in this country and have it deposited into an account that is not ASN or SNS — unless you have an account at that bank.

Previous updates here have indicated that, for a fee, you can go to a GWK/Travelex branch and either make a deposit using their ATM (by manually entering your IBAN) or over the counter with an agent. I can confirm this is not a service they offer any longer — they can only manually take deposits if you have account with ASN or SNS.

More updates have suggested that some ABN-AMRO branches or ATMs will allow the same thing. This is also not the case. They have some outlets that allow you to deposit coins and enter a non-ABN account number to receive the non-coin deposit. This is not possible with paper bills, per their customer service rep.

So! That's a long way of saying that every previous suggestion for how to deal with this is either out of date, or was always incorrect, or both.

If anyone has a working method for making a cash deposit to a bunq account, I am indeed all ears (and would be forever grateful). If someone with Bunq is reading this, MY GOD, you are a bank, HOW ON EARTH is it not possible, anywhere in this entire country, to accept paper money as a deposit? As long as cash is still used as currency, which it is, this should not be a service people have to beg for.

      Hi there,
We had the same problem as we we have Bakery factory. We receive allot of cash from retail customers who purchase directly from us.
We had contacted G4S cash solution company. We contracted them and they collect weekly the cash and deposit it in to our bank account. They charge 4% for their services, but we solved the problem

@Timothy-Turquoise-Akita#202550 Warum geht man dann zu einer online Bank wo Einzahlung nicht möglich ist?

I appreciate the two helpful replies, thanks both.

@Nadine-Violet-Falcon#202568 Why even comment here? Because I haven't needed to make a cash deposit in two years. Now I do, unexpectedly. That's why I'm raising it. Which was all pretty obvious from what I wrote above.

One workaround I have come up with on the few occasions that I wanted to deposit cash is to give it to my mom (who loves using cash) and then she transfers the money to my bunq account.

Obviously this won't work for anyone but I guess it's something.

Geldmaat machines offer the ability to deposit cash but I don't think that works for bunq which is a shame.

@Cas#202639 Nope, unfortunately Geldmaat doesn’t support bunq for cash deposits

I have a backup bank account at Rabobank, paying 3 euro or so monthly for easy money transferring.

Op je ING rekening in België kun je vlot geld storten aan de automaat. Je gaf aan die rekening te hebben, wat is dan het probleem?

@New-Green-Raven-528514334#232338 This is an old thread. In the meantime, bunq implemented new ways to deposit cash into your bunq account, which are easily accessible through the app. Viacash/Barzahlen and Paysafe:cash.

                      For Germany, Austria and Italy:
Viacash/Barzahlen More info: https://together.bunq.com/d/14531 <-- This works in Germany.

For other countries (The Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, and many more!):
                      Paysafe:cash More info: https://together.bunq.com/d/45741

                        a month later

@Jakob-Y#232344 Paysafecash is almost a scam. I could not find a shop in Amsterdam accepting kit despite all shops I tried are reported as active on Paysafecash website. Incredible Paysafecash does not even have an App!!! Rubbish service… NON service at all.

@Gianguido#233429 Did you try at one of the supported gas stations or at some small shop? At least my experience in Germany (when paying for other stuff via Paysafe) was that at gas stations the staff often knows how to search for the right card, but the smaller shops sometimes don't.

I don't know the ins and outs of how it works behind the scenes, but these smaller shops probably buy some kind of package that enables them to sell a bunch of different prepaid cards including Paysafecash, but because the demand is low the staff don't actually know how to sell every type of card, only the most common ones.

                            3 months later

@Timothy-Turquoise-Akita#202570 The gall of posting your question to the section of the app specifically designed for that - imagine! 😂 Thank you for this post, you saved me a lot of walking in AMS.
