I live next to the Netherlands also in Spain. Is het also possible to create a Spanish iban account in my bank account? I have a Spanish NIE number as identification.

Meindert At this moment that's not possible, bunq only provide Dutch IBAN accounts.
But why do you need a Spanish IBAN? They also need to accept Dutch IBAN accounts (or from other EU countries).

Bastiaan Zo werkt dat niet in landen als Frankrijk en Spanje. IBAN discriminatie in de EU is weliswaar verboden, maar een ES of FR IBAN nummer is daar nog steeds nodig of zelfs noodzakelijk.

Meindert Je kunt ook een Spaanse IBAN rekening openen in Duitsland en Nederland, online bij Openbank. Dan krijg je een ES IBAN nummer!

Meindert Basically they would need to start a company in Spain and get all the necessary certifications to operate as a bank at the Spanish national banking authority. That‘d certainly not be impossible (and N26 seems to have already done this [1]), but it‘s a huge investment of time and money and might not be feasible quite yet.

K. Kloet 🇪🇺 Yes, they have the same „issue“ if you could call it that as bunq. Like bunq they‘re active throughout multiple countries in the EEA, but they only have a full banking license from their home country. That‘s why all bunq users regardless of country get NL IBANs and all Openbank users get ES IBANs. (They call it „European IBAN“ on their site and that‘s technically true because a Spanish IBAN is indeed European, but it‘s not a special European IBAN, these don‘t exist.)

K. Kloet 🇪🇺 Ja, ook voor Nederlandse en Duitse klanten geven ze een ES IBAN uit bij Openbank. Normaal gesproken kun je vanuit Nederland online, geen Spaanse bankrekening aanvragen. Openbank is de uitzondering op de regel vanuit Nederland, en is net als Bunq een echte internet/app bank .

Dat is ook het voordeel van Bunq en Openbank; je hoeft niet respectievelijk in Nederland en Spanje te wonen om via internet daar een bankrekening in de EU aan te vragen. En vullen elkaar prima aan!
