  • Tap & Pay 'deprecated' without notifying users

Bunq recently deprecated Tap & Pay without telling its users, as confirmed by their support personnel.

It means that old users can still use it, but new users cannot activate it. Neither can old users if they buy a new phone, or if they reinstall the app for any reasons.

Bunq recommends that people use Google Pay, a product of their competitor in mobile payments. Interestingly, this is the same bunq who advertises 'Privacy' and now wants us to hand over our payment data to Google. This is also the same bunq who advertised its Tap & Pay feature not so long ago, which convinced many privacy-minded users to sign up for its services.

Bunq, removing core features is not OK. Especially not without telling users! If you want to be a BANK, and not just another software company with limited liabilities, it's time to act like that and stop pulling acts like this. Until then, you will end up alienating your users. You are welcome to put this on my user exit poll.

Hear hear. Was out grocery shopping and hadn't realised reinstalling the app (due to another bug) had irreversibly disabled Tap&Pay.

And the proposed "solution" of using Google Pay is as off-putting as it is useless:

Das betrifft mich zwar nicht, aber ich sehe immer mehr, dass bunq kein verlässlicher Partner ist. Schade.

@Josh-Bennington#219159 I agree, communication is key and if bunq would like to remove a feature, they should inform their users and customers.
However, especially if you care about privacy, get an iPhone with Pay.

Of course you can ask Google to delete it. But we all know that even 1 minute after Google received that info, you are too late!

That's the whole point. Banking is founded on trust. Building your bank on Google, as bunq seems to be doing more and more, is building your house on quicksand. No matter how hard you try, it will sink.

I'm going start orientation on a new bank....

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but if you use android then you inherently need to trust google. You can choose another mobile platform as well. Just saying. - technically I also think bunq is making the right choice here. All these point solutions where every app needs to implement this on their own are not how it should work. Using cards from multiple banks on the same phone becomes annoying pretty quickly then and I don’t think it’s time well spent for their dev teams either at this point.

Not necessarily, I have modified my phone to have as little Google as possible. And there are also people who also run lineageos without GApps installed (I'm still experimenting with that)
