@smyles#89321 A metal card can last far longer, if it’s 3x longer then it’s pretty much a wash

...which it simply wouldn't.

Notwithstanding the question if it's actually a "3 times" difference in (physical) durability, a bank card just won't be issued for 12 years. There are other technical and practical limits than just the core material of the physical card.

Many people are probably not even going to be using this bank account on premium subscription as long. And then, even if they did, a metal card would most probably be more scratched and dented than these fashion-conscious premium subscribers would be willing to put up with. Just google for experiences with N26's and Revolut's metal cards.

bunq's plastic cards are (if I'm not mistaken) issued for a validity of 4 yours. Which, in my experience, is more than the industry average already.

@NiB#89339 Scratches are easily resolved when stainless: simply polish the card and it looks brand spanking new. The plastic cards often don’t last for 4 years. Always something wrong with them after a while, most notably seperate layers letting go. A metal card that can last for 20 years would be very nice. And that they aren’t issued like that now doesn’t mean it cannot change, afaik Apple for example wants to issue them for way longer. I think they’d be a lot better if a card would be bound to a person instead of a bank/bankaccount. ;)

I’ll take a metal card over plastic any day. The primary concern I’d have with a metal card is whether or not it’ll bend.
But if needs be, I’d already gladly settle for a black plastic card. I hate the current carddesign.

If you really care about the environment don’t get cards at all and pay with your phone or smartwatch. Since everyone has one of those two things anyway and contactless payment is probably the future I don’t see the need for a metal card.

@Heda#89399 Wer sich für die Umwelt interessiert, nutzt auch besser kein umweltschädliches Smart Phone

@Heda#89399 Agreed, but it’ll be a while before all terminals support it :(

Physically maybe, depending on the choice of metal. But in terms of functionality, EMV bank cards contain cryptographic chips with very limited processing power. Their cryptographic properties and thus security will simply be outdated in 20 years.

I love metal products more than anyone else I know. I don't really feel the need for it in a bank card (which I'd rather prefer lightweight), but depending on price, I might even be tempted to get one.

As for the purported ecological and environmental advantages over regular "plastic" cards however, I think they are make-believe.

@Tijnie#35018 bunq! You need to do this!! 😍😍😍 OMG ITS SO AMAZING!!!

Martijn congratulations 🎉, look so amazing 😱😱

Tolle Idee, bin dabei. Für weitere Leistungen wie z.B. bei Revolut mit Perks, Lounges, Travel Insurance, später Aktien/Investments, Borrows wäre bunq absolut perfekt und mir persönlich auch 15 bis 20 Euro im Monat wert!

@Tijnie#35018 Wow that would be a cool looking Card for sure! /Robert, Sweden

Since you guys were so enthusiastic about this idea, I decided to improve the design of the cards! Because previous one was just a quick draw to show the concept. So here are two metal cards (or more premium color choices), but still in the bunq rainbow look. There are two options, one in a silver color and one in a dark gray/blackish color. And for sure also the same idea but then in a mockup for Apple Pay and Google Pay.
                          Enjoy! 🌈

                            @Tijnie#94037 Looks Great!😍🌈

@Tijnie#94037 Wow it looks amazing! Great work.

@Tijnie#94037 Should probably have mocked them up as credit cards 😉

@Tijnie#94037 Very nice! Think I liked your first renders better, but these are slick as well. :)

@Tijnie#94037 These look insanely good. Good job. I really hope bunq introduces something like this in the future
