• Spanish Tax Identification Number for Students

Hello,
I’m a brazilian guy doing part of my PhD at University of Barcelona in Spain. Since I'll stay in Barcelona for 84 days (I've been here for 4 days yet), I don’t need a VISA to stay here, because of this I also cannot have an NIE or a tax identification number in Spain, I only have it in Brazil. However, I cannot create a bank account without these documents (basically I only have my passport) and I’m not able to have these documents and I really need a bank account, because the university will deposit the Money for my scholarship on it, and the account must be European (like Bunq). In view of this, I want to know if I can create a bank account being a student here in Spain without a Spanish tax identification number. In addition, I can prove that I’m doing part of my PhD here in Barcelona, how much the university will pay me for this period and also a proof of address that I’m living in my friend’s house in Spain.

Cheers and thanks for the help,
Vinícius

Spanish system has multiple numbers for identification purposes, all of which can function as TIN

As you can see, even as a foreigner without a NIE, you can have a TIN that you can use with bunq:

Natural persons without Spanish nationality who do not possess a Foreigners’ Identification Number (NIE) but need a Tax Identification Number (TIN) because they are going to engage in transactions involving Spanish taxation can obtain a Tax Identification Number starting with the letter M, that will have a transitory nature, until they obtain a Foreigners’ Identification Number (NIE), where appropriate, also issued by the Tax Administration.

As stated in this document, the Tax Administration in Spain should be able to issue you such a transitory TIN starting with the letter M.

Since the NIE is becoming harder to get, the government has created another class of NIF that begins with an M (example: M1234567A). This ID may be temporary or permanent. It is designed as a simpler solution than a NIE for people who need a tax ID.

However, any foreigner who wishes to carry out any transaction that requires fiscal openness has to apply for a fiscal number at the tax authority. This is applicable for the case that the NIE-Number is in process of application or when the citizens aren’t required to have a NIE-Number.

your system rejects the entry in bunq. what to do?

@mike123#237974 Hi M. This is the community forum. Not sure what you're referring to by "your system"? What problem are you experiencing and how can we help?

            • MRookie

when entering tax if tin number the system responds that number appears invalid.

you write above that a foreigner without a nie but a tin can use it. but it says it is invalid.

@mike123#237979 It would be great if you could explain your situation a bit more clearly. This is the community forum, we're just other bunq users like yourself and we don't know you yet.

Do I understand you right that you are a resident in Spain and have been granted a TIN from the Spanish tax administration that is intended for foreigners without a NIE and that has the format M9999999L (M + 7 digits + 1 letter)? And now after you have registered your Spanish address with bunq you're having issues inputting this TIN?

If that's the case, please contact Private Support so that they can have a look at your TIN and help you with setting up your account correctly. You can get to it in the app by following these steps:

                    1. Go to Profile
                    2. Tap on Settings in the right corner on top
                    3. Scroll to the bottom, tap on Need help? Get Support, then choose Personal Support

If you have another issue please clarify. Thanks!
