  • Auto huren Hertz in VS

Hallo allemaal! Deze vraag heb ik hier en daar al voorbij zien komen maar ik stel hem voor de zekerheid nogmaals want ik zie toch wisselende reacties.
In juni gaan we naar de VS en hebben via Expedia een auto gehuurd bij Hertz. De betaling hiervan heb ik via mijn Travelcard gedaan en is “gewoon” gelukt. Nu weet ik dat er EUR 200 borg zal worden ingehouden bij het ophalen van de auto. Gaat dit werken met de Travelcard? Ik lees zaken over debit credit cardcredit card en ben ff het spoor bijster. Daarnaast las ik ergens dat het bedrag van de subrekening wordt ingehouden en je er voor moet zorgen dat daar voldoende saldo op staat. Wat is deze subrekening?
Of moet ik zorgen dat ik minimaal (het zal wel veel meer zijn) EUR 200 op de Travelcard heb staan?

    Sub-account is the term that bunq uses for your bank accounts. It's just your normal bank account at bunq.

    Yes. All cards at bunq require you to have enough money on the connected sub-account. It doesn't matter if it says Credit or Debit on the card. Please always make sure that there is enough money on the account for both: the security deposit and the payment itself.

    If there is not enough money on the account, the payment will not be successful.

      Ok dus zorgen dat er genoeg opstaat. Zoals ik aangaf heb ik de huurauto al betaald maar er zal ruim voldoende opstaan om de auto nóg een keer te huren:) maar waar het mij voornamelijk om gaat is dat het goed gaat met de Travelcard. Niet dat ze daar aan de balie dit of dat gaan roepen.

        In real life, there‘s never a 100% guarantee for any bank‘s cards to work perfectly all the time because these systems are complex and have many levels. For example terminals can be misconfigured, staff can be improperly trained, or there might be internet connection issues. Therefore I always carry cards from multiple banks with me whenever I go on a trip.

        That being said, I don‘t know and haven’t heard about any particular issue with bunq and car rental companies outside of The Netherlands. You shouldn‘t need to expect any issues.

          De reden dat ik dit vraag is het volgende: toen ik jaren geleden, wat dus blijkbaar de Travelcard heette, de card had aangevraagd gaf bunq op de site aan dat je met deze hotels kon boeken en auto’s kon huren. Dat laatste omdat deze card iets in zich had wat zich onderscheidde van andere prepaidkaarten. Ik heb er toen geen gebruik van gemaakt maar las later wel van andere gebruikers dat zij wel degelijk problemen hadden met de huur van auto’s en met name in de VS. Ik las ook toen dat Bunq toen een aanpassing in de card/systeem oid had doorgevoerd waardoor het geen problemen meer zou moeten opleveren. Ik snap dat andere factoren een rol kunnen spelen (internetverbinding/personeel) maar als ik dit uitsluit wil ik gewoon zeker weten dat ze niet zeggen: “he dit is geen creditcard” of “prepaid accepteren we niet” oid. Zonder een andere creditcard sta je daar dan…
          Ik heb de bunq mastercard vorig jaar nog gebruikt in de VS (geen autohuur) en dat ging goed.

            Yep, so indeed bunq has taken many precautions to improve the acceptance of the card, like branding it officially as Mastercard Credit and designing their system so that it works like with any other genuine credit card. Therefore they especially stress the fact that it also works for payments at hotels and car rentals, where a security deposit might be needed. And as indicated above, even though I'm a quite active user here on the community forums for some time, I haven't read about problems with card acceptance in countries like the USA.

                Ik lees net in de beschrijving van 1 hotel (in de VS) dat ze geen prepaid of oplaadbare kaarten accepteren. Betekent het nav jouw uitleg dat ik dit dan kan negeren? Omdat dit nu echt een echte creditcard is? Je hebt natuurlijk andere “echte” prepaidkaarten die anders zijn en dus niet zo verfijnd als de bunq Mastercard. Zeg ik dit goed?

                  if I can add to what @Jakob-Y just wrote, if the card is reporting on the face "Credit" that is how the vendor will see it.

                  The functionality of the Mastercard/bunq Credit Card is that the credit check are not based on your ability to pay back the credit, but on the fact that you have the amount available on the bunq account linked to the card. the moment that you swipe the card the money on your account are reserved and you won't be able to use them. When the vendor will pull the amount from MasterCard, then the charge on your account will switch from reserved to final. Sometimes the timing is immediate for immediate purchases... sometimes it might take some days to get finalized... but from bunq user the net effect is the same.

                  Other Credit Card providers, like for example American Express, do not need to have a bank account connected and they do not check if you have the money in your bank account, but check your credit availability based on the agreed amount assigned to you and the amount already spent on the current period. At the end of the month they would send you an invoice and if you do not pay in full... you are going to be charged interests on the unpaid amount... taking easily to fall in debts... which is not so nice ☹️

                  Bunq's system allows to use the card as a Credit card and at the same time prevents you for spending more than what are your available funds 👍 so that hopefully you do not over spend and fall in debt with out noticing it 🌈

                    Yep. The bunq Mastercard is a credit card, not a prepaid card and not a debit card.
