We have just sent out an email about the feedback we have been getting about the last update.

Dear fellow bunqers,


Over the past few months we worked very hard towards bunq update #5. We launched a lot of great things, such as Android NFC, the bunq worldwide MasterCard, Shared Requests, SDKs and a completely new app: bunq Premium.


Our old pricing model had its advantages but it also led to a lot of criticism: many people thought it was too complicated. If we had to incorporate all our new features in that old model it would have been one big confusing mess. That's why we came up with a clear and inclusive membership: bunq Premium.


There has been some confusion and discussion regarding bunq Premium over the last couple of days. With this email I hope to clear a few things up :).


Let's start with the confusion. An inaccurate news article, which was copied over by other media, painted an inaccurate picture. I would like to make very clear that current users can continue to use our services based on the terms that applied when they got them. There is no price increase.


Now about the discussion that has been going on within the bunq community. I believe that we can split this up in three groups:


Group 1

This is a small group of people who are very active on social media and on Together. They believe that bunq should be a low-cost price competitor. Unfortunately I have to disappoint: bunq never aimed to be cheap and it never will. There already are plenty of others who do that, and it’s not where our strength lies.


Group 2

This group exists out of approximately 400 people who love bunq very dearly and carry our core values. A group that's glad that we don't invest in shady businesses. A group that likes that we treat their private information with care, not selling it to others. A group that loves our great apps. This group was mostly frustrated by our lack of clear communication and the sudden introduction of the new membership.


To this group I want to offer my sincere apologies. We are all driven by the same love for bunq. Due to the huge effort I had put in while building this bunq update, I lost sight on how we should have introduced it properly. I want to thank you all for your honest feedback and say that I'm very sorry for my mistake. In our rush we disabled the option to create up to 10 bank accounts for everyone who had not upgraded to Premium. We are going to fix this. Additionally we will offer the option to order the old Maestro-cards again. Under the previous terms and for another month, until September 4th, 23.59. We're currently updating our code-base to accommodate this. Expect availability as of tomorrow 10.00.


My sincere apologies. I too make mistakes.


Group 3

This is a large group of people that loves bunq and our new memberships. They have been sharing their support through our in-app chat. They chose this channel because they don't want to be dragged into the public debate. They think that our new subscriptions and all of the innovations that came with it, like the rotating CVC security code on the first Dutch MasterCard Debit card, are really great. During the first twelve hours - despite most of them being during the night - we have welcomed over 1000 new bunq Premium members.


Finally I want to thank you for all your constructive feedback. We hear you, as we always have. All we need is some time to be able to act upon it.

    So the possibilitxy to open up to 10 accounts will exist further and the possibility to order a Maestro card will exist until September 4?

          I'm in group 2. Is there ever going to be a model that allows me to make smaller steps? Like 1 meastro card + android NFC for 2-3€/month? Or only Android NFC for even less?

            Sorry not falling for this poor excuse and temporarily solution for the Maestro-Card. You lost me!

              As soon as Bunq Premium was announced I upgraded and ordered a MasterCard, and I'm Oke with the price. Especially if I think about the fact that you guys are always adding new features.

              And people who are opposed to something are always louder than the people who think it is fine, that's just the way things are.

Ich brauche im Grunde genommen nur das Konto und die Android NFC App, besser noch für Android Wear. Ich brauche keine Karten. Vielleicht eine Virtuelle für das bezahlen in den Onlineshops. Somit wäre das Prämiumpaket völlig unsinnig für mich.

                  Come on guys, be honest. How can you even say there's only 400 people who are complaining. There's waaaayy more but not everyone will give his opinion on Together, as you clearly based this on the votes of specific posts.


                  Be honest and say you messed up badly and didn't expect this, at all. Or be honest and tell us that this was the plan from beginning.


                  8€ doesn't match with what you offer. There's barely any USP that justices this price.

                    Het excuus wordt gewaardeerd - maar lost mijn probleem met het nieuwe model niet op.


                    Ik heb helemaal geen 25IBAN en twéé MasterCards nodig. Nu niet, morgen of over drie maanden ook niet. Ik wil (en ga!) hier ook niet voor betalen.


                    Ik denk dat ik hiermee voor velen spreek; bedenk een model/tier (als aanvulling op premium) waarbij je geen onnodige producten hoeft af te nemen.


                    Net alsof ik naar de fietsenmaker ga voor een fiets en er verplicht een twee brommers bij móét kopen...

                        Why not grandfather in all old accounts and restore ALL rights.

                        There is still the problem that if my card expires I need to upgrade to premium. And that is not going to happen in a 1000 years. Because of the whole broken trust surrounding this update.


                        This really is a true issue Ali and you broke a lot of trust and made a lot of people very , very pissed as they where (past tens) your ambassadeurs.


                        You should place your ambassadeurs first and things like options and profit second.


                        If you don't show that you really, really care about people, bunq will be a lost case on the long term.

                        People especially ambassadeurs are your greatest assets and that just got lost om you? Unbelievable!!!!

                          Zucht. Waarom is het zo moeilijk om gewoon toe te geven dat jullie je hadden verkeken op je verdienmodel, en dat de prijzen waarvan ik tot dusver had aangenomen dat jullie ze boden omdat ze kostendekkend waren, dit bij nader inzien niet zijn? Dat is zoveel sympathieker dan een mail te schrijven waarin je mensen gaat indelen in groepen, om zo de reacties die je niet aanstaan af te kunnen doen als "onredelijk". Again, het gaat niet primair om de prijs, maar om de gedwongen overstap naar een totaalpakket dat voor veel mensen simpelweg geen meerwaarde heeft, en je verteld worden dat je moet juichen.
