  • Disabling contactless w/o making the card useless

Not so long ago I wanted to make sure contactless payments were disabled, but I couldn’t find the option anymore.

After contacting the customer service I learned that the option was removed, deleted, killed.

They also told me that one could still disable contactless but doing so would disable all other types of payments as well.

I said WoW, but this didn’t seem to bother them, it’s like this behavior was absolutely normal.

I want to be constructive and not complain just for the sake of complaining.

I find this move somewhat radical and very counterintuitive.

It’s like for those who decided and implemented this change it is ok to disable contactless and not be able to use the card anymore.

Because again, to disable contactless one has to set the only limit to ZERO, but doing so all other types of payments are also disabled, hence making the card totally useless, just because one wanted to prevent contactless payments.

I find it brutal and really surprising because for me it makes no sense to adopt this radical approach.

Where is the freedom, BUNQ ?

BUNQ is forcing us, me to use contactless no matter what, even if I don’t want to.

My BNP Paribas card is like that. Contactless is always enabled. No way to disable it, really painful.

I really hate when a merchant takes my card and try to use contactless without my permission. Sometimes they insist in doing so even when I tell them I don’t want to pay that way. It is like someone is taking some cash from your wallet, you can see him/her, but have no way of preventing it from happening.

That is really frustrating.

So I really enjoyed the possibility to smile at them and tell them, nope, with this multicolor card contactless is disabled, so you can try all you want.

These rare moments are gone.

Now I will have to be on the watch every time I will pay with my multicolor card.

Is there really, really, really no chance for BUNQ to re-enable contactless control without impacting all other type of payments ?

TIA
-Richard

While I agree that the previous security settings seemed a bit "overengineered", bringing back the ability to selectively enable/disable
    - contactless
    - card-present (store, merchant)
    - card-not-present (online internet payments)
    would be nice.

As i recall these limitations ware removed because it rendered so much support tickets and the statistics told bunq it wasn’t used a lot. I would love to see more control for the user, like disabling contactless payments or disabling tap and go. Removing the custom limits is a good call because this will couse payment fails nobody is waiting for. But when you choose to disable a feature like contactless payments this will not result in support questions i think. Something like avanced settings to hide these features in would also be a good solution.

Hope some of these settings will find there way back to the app.

I also need to disable contactless! I had hoped it would be fixed with update 9...

I would like card customizing back as well. Revolut offers this ability for FREE. Risk in high risk countries is increased with just an overall limit setting......

Sander changed the title to Disabling contactless w/o making the card useless.

              Yes, this functionality is needed!

Yup disabling contactless for a card would be an essential feature to bring back. Especially now I can use Apple Pay as an alternative

Could we please get these security features back?

Disabling contactless and always requiring a pin would be nice so I can (sort of) safely leave a card at work or in the car.

It’s really weird this basic functionality was removed...

@Paulus-Purple-Kiwi#56306 Not that weird. bunq almost always only removes a feature to reduce complexity and/or if stats show that it hardly ever is been used. In this case both reasons applied :)

@JohnDo#56310 I don’t see a anything complex about a simple toggle switch with all other banks also seem to have?

Every payment terminal will be contactless soon, no contact payment possible. There will be even terminals that will be contactless only, so it makes sense to have contactless cards.

The real problem is, that cashiers should be teached to NOT grab your card anymore. Because it is YOUR own card and you can pay with it on your own!

I also don’t like this behavior. That’s why I use smartphone to pay (ApplePay)...and I’ll never give my smartphone out of my hand

@Paulus-Purple-Kiwi#56314 The whole previous system to set limits was far too complex. A large portion of all the support questions was about these settings. So they drastically simplified that feature. Unfortunately, that unavoidable means that not everyone is going to be happy. Even adding a switch makes it more complex again for the majority. Perhaps if this gets many votes, it will maybe return!

And finally, what is the real risk of having contactless payments active? Zero to non I think

@JohnDo#56328 For me and most people in this discussion enabled contactless makes no sense because of mobile payments. Having it enabled on a backup card that is only there as backup makes a real risk in my opinion. I guess some people don’t care at all about losing to a max of 50 euros, but for me it counts.

Why the hell needs someone such a feature?

If your card gets stolen....she can be used for online shopping... Only sense is to deactivate it fully to protect the customer

@BBiker#56339 The bunq Maestro card can't be used for online shopping. The Mastercard can be used for online shopping, but the CVC is not on the card. If a merchant accepts a Mastercard without using the CVC the risk is entirely at the merchant.

So there is no risk for you at all (excpet the hassle of course) if you loose your card.

@JohnDo#56328 This is not the case with contactless payments, there the risk is at the customer once a lost card gets used for contactless payments (see chapter 13 on page 24 of the bunq conditions and terms). So bunq effectively gave you more risk to make life easier for them. For them that is great, for me that is not great at all.

I'm sure not everybody looks at money the same way, but loosing 50 euro is not "zero to non" for a me.

                                      @Paulus-Purple-Kiwi#56331 @JeroenE#56340 Hi 👋🏼 guys,

Sorry, I did not realised enough the €50 (was €150) could be a big deal for some.

Having that said... The €50 mentioned is a max that bunq could charge you according to the law. Because the financial risk is low with contactless payments I seriously doubt bunq would ever charge you the €50 in case of getting skimmed by contactless payment. And I if they did, I could argue that bunq excepted this risk by removing this feature.

So, at the end I seriously think your risk would be zero to non.... that you ever get skimmed and getting charged by bunq when it happens....
