• Howto: Expenses for somebody else

Hi,

I am little unsure on how to go about this task: I am going to upgrade my dad's PC and I am going to have to buy some parts for that. So I am going to pay everything for him upfront and then he will give me the money back. He is not a bunq user.

Now I am thinking about on how to best organise this "project".

One approach would be to open an single bunq account, call it "Dads PC", transfer € 500,- there from my Savings account for example, do all of the payments from that account, sum everything up, tell my dad the amount, wait for his payment to arrive, transfer the € 500,- back to my Savings account, create a statement and archive the account.

This seems to be to the cleanest and best to comprehend way of doing things. I guess I am just a little hesitant because it feels a little over the top "to open up an account" just for something like that. But is this actually something that bunq wants us to encourage to do? Open up accounts on the fly for things just like that (beside "normal" month-to-month spending account and the such)? I don't know, it just feels odd and wrong in a way, so I am looking for others here telling me that this is perfectly fine and a good way, I guess.

Or are there any other ideas on how to go about things like that? What about "Slice"? But as far as I understand oder see it, Slice is kind of dead as almost the same things can be achieved with the way I described above, right? Plus the thing I want to do is not a Group-Expense - I am just making advance payments for somebody.

Looking forward to your input on this! Thx and Cheers

@Marc-Cyan-Dolphin#41455 In th epast I just kept the receipts and tallied them up and asked for the money. I guess with Bunq I would do the same thing you said. Just open an account, make sure there's enough money on it and in the end ask for the money bak. As long as you know what amount you put on it, the amount you ask for is just "start balance minus current balance". So if you start with 500 euro and after all parts are bought you have 43,78 left then you should ask for 500 - 43,78 = 456,22.

You don't actually need to close the account, you could use it again in the future for someone else's PC :)

@Marc-Cyan-Dolphin#41455 Your Solution is the way i would go without a credit card. When i loan money your way, i pay with a credit card so my money never leaves my account. (Also my credit card has its dedicated bunq acc.)

@Marc-Cyan-Dolphin#41455 I thought of another way. You could just use your own accounts and everytime you buy something you add a note in the Bunq app. If you choose something unique like "DadsPC2018" you can use this to search for all the transactions later.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I still favor the first idea as this keeps everything neatly tucked together in one easy to understand progression-flow and I can create a statement in the end so it's really super transparent for everyone.

Another benefit I see of doing things that way is that at any time - or if matters change I can connect the account to other people like my Dad himself for example or if my wife took over or whatever. I am just going over a couple of cases here and thinking about other scenarios.

I guess this thread is just a little "thinking out loud" for me and I am always excited for with what other people might come up with! I think the central "crux" for me was to really grant myself to "waste" accounts/IBANs even for temporarily projects - in a sense tearing down the brick & mortar in my brains that those banks of the past build up for us by making everything so complicated and implying the ductus of importance upon us. :)

Have a great weekend everyone and keep on bunqing!

I would go the Slice way, this is much cleaner than the separate account way. You can easily add the expanses if payed from your bunq accounts. Your dad has some inside along the way.
It also keeps your accounts IBAN list clean.

I have a permanent account for ‘third parties’, usally comittees or clubs. But for larger projects, I open a new account. Why not?
