  • iDeal and Maestro?

Rookie question. So we got the Bunq Maestro card, and we R ecstatic. Finally graduated from 2nd class citizenship!
But I’m a bit confused. What’s the difference between iDeal and Maestro? Is iDeal the network layer and Maestro like an ISP offering services on that network? Are there debit card systems other than Maestro on iDeal network?
It’s a totally technical and useless q, but if someone can enlighten me, greatly appropriated!

    @New-Violet-Chicken-2289734925#263172 Hi!

    Maestro and iDeal have nothing to do with each other. Because if you pay using iDeal, you're paying directly from your bank account. Your card isn't involved in this process, and you can pay something using iDeal without even owning a card at all.

    iDeal is a Dutch online payment method to be able to pay online from your bank account. This system was put in place, because you're unable to do online payments with a Maestro card (at least in the Netherlands). Maestro is a type of debit card used in the Netherlands and Belgium. Maestro is owned by MasterCard.

    There are other debit card solutions, like V Pay from Visa. MasterCard also has a "Mastercard debit".

    Is there anything else you would like to know?

      I think it's a very good question and well-worded. Many native Dutch probably also don't know exactly what iDEAL, Maestro etc. really stand for, if they're not interested in banking and payment. So don't worry, I think I speak for all "resident" users here on Together when I say that we love answering such questions.

        @thijsoost#263174 I see! I was really worried when I applied for the Bunq card because it didn’t mention iDeal specifically. So I thought maybe Maestro inherently included iDeal. Thanks for clearing that up!

          @New-Violet-Chicken-2289734925#263197 iDeal is certainly supported by bunq! Bunq is a Dutch bank, so it supports most Dutch systems.

            @thijsoost#263202 Yes, I can now self-checkout at Albert Heijns so I figured that out! (Grin)

              How do I do that, please? I really need that.
              UPD: Nevermind, I was completely ignorant of the fact that when you pay with iDEAL using the BUNQ app, you choose the sub-account, not the card. Duh!
