For incoming Euro payments through the SWIFT network, as long as the payment amount is lower than 10000 Euros, bunq's fees are actually quite reasonable in comparison. They only take 5 Euros. But when you send money with SWIFT, it can mean that it changes hands multiple times through different banks in different countries. They have completely unpredictable fees, that's just the nature of a SWIFT transfer. Therefore it's not unusual that for a 100 Euro transfer you would only receive 80 Euros in the end.

In most cases, therefore it's a bad idea to use SWIFT transfers. If you're sending Euros from another country in the SEPA region, always make sure to use a SEPA transfer. If you're sending Euros from a country outside of SEPA, then you should first do some research into third-party solutions that might help facilitate a cheaper transfer, like Wise. What service will be the best can be very different depending on what country you're sending from, how much money you're gonna send, the purpose of the transfer etc. -- and in some rare cases you will find, that SWIFT may actually be the best option. But it shouldn't be where you start looking.

And let's not start to talk about transaction times with SWIFT, they're equally as unpredictable as the fees.
