  • Tap&Pay no pin required for small amounts.

Dear bunq and fellow bunqers,

As you might know, I regularly has some issues with Tap&Pay: https://together.bunq.com/topic/tappay-still-bugs-the-hell-out-of-me

If I understand it correctly, there a three conditions for T&P in order to works flawless (without the extra authorization step):

Especially the second bullet gives me some headache and doesn't work always flawless in my case.

What I propose

I know second bullet is mandatory when using Dutch terminals. They all require a pin above 25 euro and when reaching the 50 euro a day. But why don't skip this check for payments below this point? That will make the T&P experience a whole lot better. And the risks are very slim with these low amounts. Maybe there other requirements in different countries, but you guys can make some smart features I know for sure.

So, thank you in advanced for building this :)

You hit the nail on its head, John ;)

Unfortunately no response from bunq yet.. πŸ˜”

I don't really understand your proposal John. I understand you want to skip some checks when you make small payments, but which check exactly?

You talk about a phone pin, but (I assume) also about a terminal pin. Is the terminal pin you want to skip?

Hi RenΓ©, sorry if I'm not clear enough. Let me try to explain better. Example: When you do a regular contactless payment with your card of €26, the terminal always asks to enter a pin because the payment is above the €25. This is not a bunq rule but a Dutch rule. So far so good. This pin is also required when you do a contactless payments using NFC aka your phone. Instead of asking the user for a pin during payment, bunq implemented the second bullet. So if you unlock your phone (by pin of finger) and do an NFC payment within 5min after that, you don't have to enter a pin during payment. If this is not the case, the app will ask for a pin code during the T&P payment. Love it.

          But there are 3 problems:

So, I would like bunq to skip the unlock-check for small amounts.

Does this clear things up? Greets, John

Perfectly clear and seems like a reasonable request to improve the convenience. You got my vote.

For me personally the NFC payments are a mystery anyway... Sometimes the terminal doesn't seem to recognise the phone at all after unlocking it, while other times it works flawless (in the same shop). Don't think that's an error caused by bunq though.

There is no PIN with Tap and Pay!

I think you mean that bunq should fix the extra authorisation and set the app like android Pay. So unlock the phone and have a secure phone lock should be enough and no second unlock for the app is needed.

In case of no pin, the app uses CDCVM.

But maybe it's better for such payment to use android pay or a bank outside Netherlands, because outside the daily limits up to 50.000 Euro... Bunq only 150. And even this needs at bunq a twice out in most cases (at my S8).

Hi Imro! Always good to hear you opinion.

I did some quick searching in the MasterCard documentation and I quote:

"A new form of CVM called Consumer Device Cardholder Verification (CDCVM) is available with mobile contactless devices. In this case the consumer enters a PIN (or biometric) on the mobile device. Two versions are supported:

β€’ Early CDCVM. The consumer provides the verification before the tap (typically while waiting in the line or queue).

β€’ Two-Tap. The consumer taps their device onto the reader to start the transaction, moves their phone away for CDCVM when prompted, and taps again to complete the transaction.

CDCVM can also be supported through biometric technology, if the device is fitted with a fingerprint reader for example. For contactless transactions below the CVM limit, a receipt is not required unless the consumer requests it. For transactions above the limit, a receipt must always be provided."

So, if I understand it correctly MasterCard support the option to skip the verification for low amounts. I would like bunq to implement this.

                      a month later

                      Hi All,

I love the revamp of Tap&Pay since Update7! I give it a 9! But, bunq could make it a 10 by implementing this wish :)

                      Greets,

                      John

                        3 months later

CDCVM is the way Gpay is doing this. Would be great to see this with bunq tap and pay to have a similar experience.

I hope this wish is still on the wishlist, even with the new tap and pay process.

CDCVM would be so great for tap and pay with a limit of 25€ for no 2. authorization.

Why would I choose to pay with my phones NFC if pulling out my card and holding it Against the terminal is much faster??

Im paying 8 euros a month, basically just so I can use a basic debitcard... the NFC option takes too much time and makes "fast" payments with your phone pretty useless if its not "fast".... Card is thinner, smaller, lighter, faster than the NFC option of bunq right now...
