  • [Suggestion] Take your IBAN with you when switching bank

A solution like switching to a new cell phone provider would be extremely helpful and would save a lot of time.
If I change banks, I can simply take my IBAN with me.
Certainly this is not bunq's sole decision, but it should be possible in Europe to introduce such a feature bank-wide.

@New-Jade-Civet-3708145759#267714 Well, your IBAN imcludes "BUNQ". Then there should also be a new IBAN system that doesn't include the name of your bank in the IBAN. But this could be a useful thing! Who knows, in the future ๐Ÿš€

My IBAN starts with DExxx. My old and my new IBAN with bunq. There must be standardization committee with in the banking sector. Could you please forward this idea to the right person with in bunq and let see what happens. Thx

@New-Jade-Civet-3708145759#267718 I don't work for bunq, so I can't forward anything. I'm just a bunq user just like you

Okey. I did not know that. Is there a way to forward suggestions for improvement to bunq?
          Thx

@New-Jade-Civet-3708145759#267714 Every IBAN contains the bank identification number/code of the respective bank in charge of the account. Your suggestion is going to render that very important information useless, since it requires banks to host accounts with other bank identifiers than their own. In other words: banks would have to impersionate other banks.

That is not how it works. An IBAN is NOT identifing you! It is solely used to identify a bank and then a specific acoount number within that bank. On some banks old account numbers (and with that IBANs) are even given to new customers after a specific hold time.

@New-Jade-Civet-3708145759#267733 Yes! By posting them here in the community using the Together website (https://together.bunq.com/) and adding the "Ideas" tag, and putting "[Suggestion]" in front of your title.

I'll do so for you for this post. Although it's not something bunq can do alone or anytime soon.

Thijs changed the title to [Suggestion] Take your IBAN with you when switching bank.

@New-Jade-Civet-3708145759#267718 Yeah, it is standardized like that:
Country Code / Checksum / Bank Identifier / Account Identifier
It is definitely not a random number! ๐Ÿ˜‰

@New-Jade-Civet-3708145759#267714 This is definitely the completely wrong place as a small bank like bunq can hardly do anything to push such a thing. But your idea is of course pretty good, many people are wanting this since many years.

That + having โ€žEUโ€œ-IBANs without a specific country would really push forward the European banking system into the future in my opinion ๐Ÿ˜Œ

@Jakob-Y#267761 Yeah, an "EU" country code for banks like bunq would be awesome. ๐Ÿ˜Š But at the same time I hope it does not further increase the extreme length requirements some EU countries already have (e.g. 31 characters in Malta). ๐Ÿ˜…

But it definitely may be the chance to get rid of bank ID information within IBANs, just like Burundi, Iran, and Costa Rica. Without a specific bank identification included, those EU IBANs could be customer specific and portable between banks. ๐Ÿ‘

@Jakob-Y#267761 With Mobilephone numbers it took also 10 years and numberporting is working in each country. I am sure, that this works someday in the bank sector as well. And of cause each bank, independently of its size, can put ideas to such standard organisationsโ€ฆ.
