  • Anti-Fraud Guide: Fraudulent verification requests on Marktplaats

Hey bunqers 🌈

Fraudsters are becoming increasingly active on platforms like Marktplaats. They often approach unsuspecting buyers or sellers on WhatsApp with fake verification requests. Here’s how these scams work, how to recognize them, and how you can protect yourself.

How does the scam work?

  • You’re selling something on Marktplaats.
  • A scammer pretends to be an interested buyer and contacts you via chat.
  • They convince you to click on a “verification link” and enter the 6-digit code you receive, claiming it’s necessary to complete the payment.
  • Once you share the code, the scammer uses it to gain access to your account, compromising your security.

How can I recognize this type of fraud?

Here are some tips to help you identify and avoid scams:

  • Trust your instincts: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always double-check the market value of items you’re buying or selling—prices that seem unusually low may be a red flag.
  • Protect your credentials: No institution, bank, or third party should ever ask for your unique login credentials or access codes for the bunq app. If someone asks for this information, assume it’s fraud and act accordingly.
  • Stay alert: Be cautious with unsolicited links or requests for personal information.
