Just told by a friend that if you apply for an account and say you are from the UK the account does not go through yet the UK is still within the EEC area, any ideas why this is???

These two are the only two entities that are of interest when it comes to where bunq is allowed to operate.
This is correct, bunq currently does not operate in the UK and hence isn‘t available for residents there.
