Hey bunqers 🌈
At bunq, your safety is our top priority. That’s why we’re sharing some simple and handy tips to help you keep your account and personal data secure.
Sometimes, others might try to misuse your identity or account for illegal activities. But don’t worry - staying safe is simple. Here’s how you can protect yourself from money muling.
What Is money muling?
Similarly to drug mules, money mules are used as carriers for activities that are too risky for the fraudsters to engage in personally. Money mules are individuals who (un)knowingly help fraudsters transfer funds, making it easier for them to perform illegal activities. Instead of using their own accounts, fraudsters exploit accounts created in someone else’s name to launder money. Sadly, if this happens, you—the account holder—are the one who will be held responsible for these illegal transactions.
Money mules either allow others to access and use their accounts, or make transactions at the request of third parties.
Here’s something to always keep in mind: if what they were doing was legitimate, they would use their own accounts! Muling is a form of money laundering, and it’s not just illegal - it’s actively pursued by law enforcement.
How to avoid being misled into money muling?
Fraudsters can be persuasive, so it’s always a good idea to be cautious whenever someone asks for anything related to your banking.
👁️🗨️ Follow these 6 essential tips to keep yourself and your account safe:
- Never do banking favors. Don’t allow anyone - even someone you know - to access your accounts or make transfers on their behalf. This applies whether it’s out of goodwill or in exchange for payment.
- Beware of too-good-to-be-true offers. Be cautious of job offers, loans, or bonuses that promise fast and easy money, especially from strangers or social media.
- Protect your login credentials. Never share your login details or personal information with anyone.
- Spot fake websites. Always double-check links before clicking. If the spelling, format, or domain name looks off, it’s likely a scam.
- Keep your details private. Never post your bank or card details online or in group chats, even if they seem private.
