  • [Suggestion] MasterCard Debit-2023 DigitalOnly

I can see I can order a MasterCard Debit-2023 for 9,99. My maestro cards are still valid so for the time being I am okay.

Related topic.

I would like to request the ability to order a digital non-physical version of the card.

At the moment, the add-card menu labels this card at a cost point of 9,99 fee. I hope to see a lower fee for a digital-only one.

With the ability of linking the card to Apple Pay the need decreases. Please allow me to decide which cards I want digital and psychical and which ones I want digital only.

With digicards this is already possible (MasterCard Credit) but with debit it seems it is not.

I totally agree that this should be possible for all cards, to have a digital only version. I do however prefer debit cards to be free when they are digital only.

        @Joeri-Silver-Lynx#274539 Hi!

Thanks for your comment and your suggestion. We make sure to always cater to the best options for our users. With the implementation of Digicards, we decided that offering virtual Mastercard Credit cards was the best option.

We will keep and eye on this topic in case of additional requests!

Hey Vitaly, when DigiCards or its precursor Virtual Cards was launched, that made total sense. It was a product mostly for online use augmenting the existing Maestro Cards that were for offline use.

          Sense then, things have changed:

          • Paying per Phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay) was launched and its use has increased.
          • Not sure since when but Bunq offers the ability to 'Get Physical card' of a DigiCard (Mastercard Credit) at a later date, in a sense 'upgrading' the card from a DigiCard to a 'normal' one.
          • When adding new cards, bunq hints at adding it to Apple Pay.
          • Maestro will be replaced by MasterCard debit.

So with all that on our canvas. It's not that big a leap to start using MasterCard Debit via Apple Pay initially and if the moment ever arrives that one needs a physical card, one can order it at a later date.

Perhaps there is a technological reason why these cards cannot be digital only. Care to share?
Imagine how much plastic can be saved by making this opt-in or opt-out.

By offering this feature to me I can choose which of the three cards included in my subscription I want a physical card for, so that in situations in which NFC fails, I have a fall back, but my regular use is covered by your integration with Apple Pay / Google Pay.

Finally, you mention you will keep an eye on this topic hinting at a sort of measurement. Thank you, but I would be surprised how many users take the effort to find it.

This is typically a case in which your default design chooses for you.

            When deep diving😎:

Imagine that during the process of ordering a card, bunq has this oppertunity to ask the user if they want a digital-only or digital+real card.

Now the design challenge is, what is the default?

Here comes some creativity at play:

            I wouldn't make the default either 100% opt-in or 100% opt-out.

We can make some assertions based on the user.

            1. If the user already has a physical card of the same type which can be switched to any sub-account, the would mean +1 for making digital only their default choice and making ordering a card the opt-in choice.
            2. Secondly, you have statistics on age-groups, user postal code and payment method usage (Apple Pay vs Card): Use the average usage to assign the +1 to the side the user is estimated to best-fit in.
            3. For users who have been your client for some while, use their usage to make an guestimate what they would prefer.

You combine these three (example) data points to offer the best-fit default to that specific user going through the card-order process.

So ultimately the choice is still up to the user, but the default is not static but depended on factors related to the user.

(Want to make it more complicated? Sure, if you have hard data, you could design four paths in stead of two: ask (default digital only), ask (default digital+real), do (default digital only), do (default digital + real).
