Bunq: Easy Money
For myself, I have a Debit MasterCard. That one is good and widely accepted.
But for a friend, I wanted to request one and it shows only the option for a Debit MeastroCard. One is not that useful if you are traveling abroad. Also, i heard that Meastro will be obsolete soon. So why this option is given ?
I would really prefer a Debit MasterCard, how can i get one ?

    Hey there, @New-Green-Frog-3273716384#283926 πŸ‘‹
Thank you for your interest in obtaining a Debit MasterCard. Currently, in the Netherlands, we offer Maestro Debit Cards, which will remain effective until 2027 πŸ™Œ

While Maestro cards are widely accepted domestically, we understand that the Debit MasterCard offers more convenience for international travel 🧳

If and when a change occurs, we'll let our users know πŸ“£

@sotirios-Black-Moose#283929 Hi Sheldon, I made a post about the same problem: https://together.bunq.com/d/57961-bring-back-the-mastercard-debit-card.

I am quite dissapointed because I switched my accounts to Bunq after checking that you offered the Debit MasterCard. I travel a lot and I do not want a Credit card.
When I made my account the option was available and I got a MasterCard Debit card. Two weeks later when I wanted another one to use for my joint account it was gone.

The Maestro Debit card will be functional until 2027 but it is asked of providers to help the transition to Mastercard Debit. I was so happy that AH now accepts Mastercard Debit so I don't have to have so many cards.
Why did you change this? Is there plans of bringing it back?

I would like to know if the chances of Mastercard Debit card support in the coming year are slim.

"If and when a change occurs, we'll let our users know"
Just wanted to check in whether I missed the update about the MasterCard Debit support dissapearing. How and where do I keep updated with the functionality changes?

        Hey @New-Navy-Opossum-3720245506#283938 πŸ‘‹
Thank you for your feedback. We transitioned to Debit Maestro cards in the Netherlands due to better domestic acceptance. At this time, we don't have specific plans to bring back Debit Mastercards, but we'll keep our users informed if there are any changes in the future. To stay updated on functionality changes, please check our official communication channels, including the bunq app, website, and Together community πŸ“£

          Hello Sheldon
I think the Netherlands is putting a lot of effort into the acceptance of Debit Mastercards and is succeeding quite well. Meastro and Mastercard now have the same fees for retailers so they have no reason not to provide it.

Even ING is providing Debit Mastercards instead of Meastro and V-PAY. I would of thought Bunq would be at least as progressive as ING.

Why can't you offer both at the moment?
Am I correct that the removal of the support for Mastercard Debit was not mentioned on any official communication channels? I can't find it.

@sotirios-Black-Moose#283950 "this time, we don't have specific plans to bring back Debit Mastercards". It's not like bunq has the option to NOT bring them back, Maestro will cease to exist soon and thus no new cards will be offered. So it's either that, or no debit cards at all.

              @Partydoos#283963 @sotirios-Black-Moose#283950
They are saying they can wait until 2027.

I would really like to know the reason. The course of events doesn't make much sense.

Creating a community post in 2022 about plans in the Netherlands to replace Meastro Debit by Mastercard Debit in 2023.
              Offering the Mastercard Debit.
Right as the Netherland actually switches in July 2023, removing the Mastercard Debit.
And now I see that community post from 2022 has been deleted? The post I linked to is now a broken URL? (https://together.bunq.com/d/55260-maestro-cards-will-be-replaced-with-debit-mastercards-from-2023)

                5 days later

I just ran into the same issue, but later noticed that via the web.bunq you can still order it, just not via the app.

                  Hey there, @New-Black-Goose-2017851375#284214 πŸ‘‹
Thanks for reporting this! Since the Debit Mastercard shouldn't be available to users residing in the Netherlands, I reported this to the relevant team, so they can take the required action and fix it right away πŸš€

Why remove the option? Isn't it good to offer both?

@sotirios-Black-Moose#284225 If the Debit Mastercard is discontinued for Dutch users, why is this not communicated, but silently removed?

PS: The last public message of bunq regarding cards in the Netherlands stated that Maestro would be discontinued in favor of Mastercard Debit. Now, the whole plan changed, and bunq stays silent about it. What happend to transparency?

Now people have to find out by themselves that bunq doesn't offer debit cards that can be used online anymore, and might have to find a second bank.

@pbruins84#284236 Agreed! As far as I know, Maestro would be discontinued starting last July, but now it looks like Maestro stays? Why not give users the option to order a Maestro AND a Mastercard debit?

                          Hey there, @Partydoos#284241 @thijsoost#284237 @pbruins84#284236 @New-Black-Goose-2017851375#284235 πŸ‘‹
It's great to see you all being active on this matter! We apologize for any confusion. We've made the decision to discontinue Debit Mastercards for users residing in the Netherlands due to acceptance issues. However, Maestro cards will still be valid and usable until the end of 2027. We understand the importance of transparency, and we'll make sure to announce any changes to our card offerings in advance πŸ™Œ We really appreciate your understanding 🌈

@sotirios-Black-Moose#284242 I understand that Mastercard debit might not be accepted everywhere in the Netherlands. But what about when I'm going abroad? Sure I can use a Mastercard credit, but what if I prefer the Mastercard debit? It has always been possible at bunq to order a Maestro, Mastercard debit and Mastercard credit card in the Netherlands. The acceptance of Mastercard debit only improved in the last few years, so to me it makes no sense to stop issuing them now to Dutch users πŸ€”

                              Hey @thijsoost#284243 🫢
I appreciate your perspective, and understand your concerns. While it's true that the acceptance of Mastercard debit has improved in recent years, we've made the decision to discontinue Debit Mastercard for users in the Netherlands due to specific acceptance issues. We want to ensure the best experience for our users, and this decision is aimed at addressing those challenges.

I understand that you prefer the Debit Mastercard, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. When a change takes place, we'll make sure to announce it to our users πŸ“£

@sotirios-Black-Moose#284247 Why not just add a warning before ordering saying 'Note: acceptance of Debit Mastercards in the Netherlands might currently be limited.' (or smth along those lines) instead of taking the whole thing away.

@Partydoos#284248 This is exactly how it was in the past, I'm not sure why this didn't suffice. To me the change is still a bit weird: just give users an informed choice.
