If you share an iban “NL…01” with a vendor for the purpose of direct debit, you should receive it on that 01 account like you mentioned.
If incoming direct debits show a different sub-accounts than the original IBAN that was shared, I would classify that as unexpected and as a bug.

Auto-select has nothing to do with direct debits. That applies to card payments, not direct debits.
With incoming direct debits one does have the opportunity to pay them with a different sub-account if you want for whatever reason (one-time redirect), but by default it should list the subaccount linked to the IBAN you shared with the vendor.
If one went through the trouble of entering a specific iban of- for example - a budget subaccount, it should be deducted from that account (read “come in at”).
